God talks to different people in different ways, an example, a soldier is running from his enemy, and hides in a field filled with caves, he started to pray. "Lord if it is your will help me out, and if not I still love you". He finished his prayer and a spider started to build a web at the entrance of the cave. The man thought for sure he was dead, the spiders web can not hold a man back. The enemy got closer and the man said "God you do have a sense of humor". The enemy came up to the mouth of the cave and looked at the entrance and just walked off. The man then noticed that since the spider had made the web, they thought no one can be in there since the web is intact. The enemy walked off, the spider hid and the man lived to tell this story. Did God answer the man back with words, no. But in action, yes.
God can speak to you through nature, through someone else, and of course directly. You will know when it is God's voice or yourself.
Take care and know God loves you very much. God bless always.

I am not sure if there is a devinitive answer. But I do know that if whatever my thought might be if it in any disagrees with Scripture it is not from God. For God will not disagree with himself. That being said would mean I would need to search Scripture to find a situation like my own and how God spoke about it or dealt with it.

Being an Atheist I've done quite a study into the god delusion.
If you went to a psychiatrist and told him you were talking to an invisible friend he'd have you committed but if you said it was god he'd smile and say that's alright.
Funny isn't it?
The god delusion is the only form of madness accepted by the state.
Apparently god's got a bit of an accent. I used to think it was like James Mason's but that doesn't make sense seeing as god was Jewish and all. It's more likely he sounds like Jackie Mason - nah - that's too New Yark.
Mmm. He'd have to have a low voice like Paul Robeson but with an accent like Yitzhak Rabin
So if you have someone talking in your head that sounds UNLIKE any of the above I'd have my head seen to.
On the other hand, if you have someone talking in your head that sounds LIKE any of the above I'd have my head seen to, too cos you know your imagination has gone into freefall and the madhouse is just round the corner.
We are watching you.

If you can't tell the difference between your own thought and something Divine, than maybe you are god? I get my divine thoughts in such a profound and forceful way that it can only be The Morrigan. Her bullet statements are done in a way that they are not of my own personality. I may not be a God yet but I do have my Pope card!!

When my own thoughts have nothing to do with God or Godliness, I know they are my own. When my thoughts are focused on God and Godly life, then He can empress upon me things that are of Him, and I am open to His guidance. Note that God does not implant thoughts into people. We are free thinkers. But He can, and does, guide our thoughts if we will allow Him to do so. He has told us to think on things that are of Him, and instructed that we should meditate on Him and His Word and ways, but He doesn't do it for us.

Look at those poor people who were on the Titanic and there's your answer. It must be difficult for christians to tell (even if they don't think so). There are coincidences that happen, but you can't credit god for all of the good fortune and lessons learned, and then blame the devil for the parts that you don't like. Nobody can prove god does or doesn't talk to people.

If the thoughts are telling you to do something that would harm yourself or someone else, then it's not God.
If the thought is something that you probably would not have been able to conclude given your current situation and experiences, and it is theologically sound and consistent with Scriptures and religious teachings, then it probably is God.

His sheep know His voice and they follow Him. It's as simple as that. Yes, He talks to me through the Holy Spirit. It is an inner voice that you know did not originate with yourself. It's hard to explain or understand unless you are a Christian....although God speaks to unbelievers also. He wants communication with His creation and speaks to us in a way that we know it is Him. Satan also speaks to us, and I know when it's him talking, too! Without the benefit of the Holy Spirit the unbeliever can mistake one for the other very easily.

God speaks in a still voice inside of me. The Holy Spirit is inside me (since my sins are forgiven through Christ) and I "hear" a voice inside.
I know that God never violates His word and often He speaks right from the Bible. God will never contradict His Word.
Also, I continue to pray it through to be sure. I continue until I am sure and I often seek confirmation from people I trust and who will pray with me.
I've also noticed that "God" thoughts will seem to just drop inside of my mind - not like thoughts coming from inside me.
God also speaks at times through other people and somtimes through circumstances.

Everyone receives voices from their mind. The religions have jumped on this bandwagon and claim that if the voice is positive it's God and if it's negative, its from the Devil or the result of some undigested potato.
