Does anyone have experience with Type 1 (Juvenile) Diabetes? My son's father's family has several with it and my 4 year old son is demonstrating some of the symtoms including bedwetting, weight loss, increased hunger and thirst...does anyone have experience with this? What were your child's symptoms and age? How did the testing work?

My husband has type 1. He was diagnosed when he was 12, now he is 32.
It definitely sounds like you should get your son to the Dr. The sooner you find out and start treating it, the better. Good luck, we know how hard it is to deal with this disease. But the good news is, they are getting much better at controlling it now.

To Jennanderton - please bear in mind the mother might live in a place where doctor's visits are a big financial strain.

However I agree the child should be examined by a doctor, more because of the weight loss.

But in the meantime we can provide a bit of reassurance as this mother is obviously very worried.

To the mother - these symptoms could indicate many other possible causes apart from diabetes, so don't get too anxious. It's possible that your little boy is very worried about something or afraid of something - that would explain the bedwetting at least.

It is best to take him to a doctor as soon as you can, but try not to jump to conclusions.

All 4 year olds have those 'symptoms'. Sounds to me like he going through a growth spurt with the weight loss, increased hunger, thirst. Does he look taller to you? Bedwetting is usually caused by stress. Are there any major changes in his life? our 4 year old wet the bed a few times after his brother was born. if you think he may have diabetes take him to his doc and have his blood tested. Also, don't give him foods with sugar. good luck.

those are signs of a growth spurt also and bedwetting is very common this age and is not a good sign if you think he might have pick up your phone and call the doctor , never ask a random group of strangers medical questions we are not qualified to answer and if we are we still shouldnt since we dont have any of your medical history or your sons call the doctor
