My boys, ages 6 and almost 5, have always only watched TV shows that have some value. Whether the value is educational, moral, or character-building, everything they watch, I feel good about.
But they are growing up and getting bored with Franklin and Curious George. They like things that are more exciting. They are attracted to shows like Batman and Power Rangers. I know I can't force them to watch preschool shows forever, so do you have any suggestions for quality shows that will interest older boys?

Let me clarify, they don't watch much TV. They play outside and read plenty. I just want to make sure that the TV they do watch is good for them.

WOW you just described my son....I don't wanna put a label on your son but have you considered ADHD? I know that alot pf people get pissed when that is suggested but sometimes you have to face the facts. Yes it is over diagnosed but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist. And most ADHA kids are geniuses!!!My son has an amazing imagination and is very smart. The reason he is doing poorly in school isn't because he is unintelligent it's because he is bored. The amazing thing about kids with ADHD is there is an amazing tool out there that you can buy anywhere, for as little as a dollar, at any grocery store that will put the concentration back into his little brain....I call it CAFFEINE. Kids that are over active have the wiring a little backwards in their head, I am the same way. Caffeine calms me down and helps me concentrate. It's a great harmless little test to do for your son. Give him 4 oz of coffee with Milk and Sugar on the weekend..that way if he get's a little jazzed you can control it by sending his butt outside. But you will know within a few minutes if it's working. Of course this should never be substituted for a Doctors opinion. But it's a great alternative to medications. I'm sure that i will get alot of negative feedback from other members on here but this is just my opinion and what I know to work.

Sesame street is still great for them, unless if they are "too old" to watch baby shows(that is usually what they say). AOL.com has free videos and TV shows check them out they might have some of the quality shows that you grew up on and that you liked-and better yet it is free. PBS kids is good too. Disney has some shows but they are kind of geared more towards teens. Nick Jr is good. Nickelodeon is half and half in my book they have some good things and then they have some stuff that I do not like. I do not like Sponge Bob Square Pants it is so mind numbing!

My boys really liked Aurther (on PBS kids), sometimes they would watch full house and still do which is a good quality show. Spongebob has always been a favorite in our home but I don't know if that is your definition of "quality". My boys also watch Suite Life of Zack and Cody on Disney Channel.

The shows that are meant for younger kids are not cartoons and deal with stuff like boyfriend/girlfriend, being popular. This generation is growing up way too fast. When i was growing up, the only non-cartoon shows we watched were full house, mr.rogers neighborhood and sesame street. Check out these sites for guidance!

Go Diego Go is a great show for boys. It does interactive play with the kids and has a lesson about animals everytime. It is made by the people who do Dora the Explorer. I don't know if they do Zaboomafoo still or not, but my son still likes that show and he is ten. It is done by the Kratt brothers. They love animals and our really silly. They tell stories and have real animals at their house. The Backyardigans are fun and they love to sing and use their imagination.

Instead of TV get them to read books instead. Action shows can be too violent...even cartoons.
