You just 'know'!! You don;t have to question or doubt. You have a feeling and you know it's real!!!!

How often have you been able to understand what people, or especially your kids, are thinking even though they're telling you something completely different? They might think you're intuitive, but no, it's a case of "been there, done that" so you can't fool me.
It comes from experience and it's a bit like mind-reading.

Hope that helps a wee bit, but somehow, something - call it intuition - tells me it won't. I bet you've all looked up the word in the dictionary whilst I've been too lazy. so, you'll all be right and I'll be wrong. Oh, jeez!

You're right enough though, what a difficult one to answer. Looks like you're well intuitive.

I think our brain gathers information that may not fit with our other five senses. So having no real name for it we call it intuition. Some people rely on sight or hearing for most of their information. But if you have learned to use all your senses, you probably pick up information that seems beyond your regular senses. I think there is probably a natural explanation.

Let’s be clear about this. Intuition is not the same thing as the Holy Spirit. Intuition comes from the information gathered from our brains and is completely natural. When you feel the Holy Spirit you know it is coming from another place.

It is a pleasure to find someone who has the understanding (intuition) to ask meaningful questions; which are difficult. I have grown sick looking for good questions.

There is (to my mind) no good, working, proper or rational definition of the word intuition in my little Webster's. It says this: Intuition: "The capactiy of knowing without the use of rational processes. b. Knowledge acquired in this way. 2. Keen insight." (Now is keen sharp? or peachy?)

Now we go to insight. "The ability to perceive the true or hidden nature of things. 2. A perceptive observation."

Some of the synonyms given by Webster are a little more to the point: Insight, acumen, perspicuity, penetration, discernment, instinct, clairvoyance. My first choice, over insight, is discernment. (I use discernment, not clairvoyance, because discernment is closer to Scripture; while the latter is more associated with spiritualism. Both are making use of a form of intuition, but for different reasons.)

In the opening paragraph I use understanding as a syn. of intuition. We could say it is a "sure knowing." Probably the most common use of the word in speech or writing can be found in the phrase -- A woman's intuition. So in social parlance intuition is often related to the female side.

Another synonym for intuition (to my mind) is faith -- that is the knowing that you know, that you know, that what you are perceiving is going to manifest in the physical world. Ergo faith!

Now you have to pick from all these words and ideas to claim a true idea of intiution; based on what is going on inside of you. These words come from my experience and I can only hope they relate to what you need.

Where intuition comes from is the other part of the puzzle; and this is what tells me you have some insight! There are to my mind a number of sources for intution; and a variety of understandings about how these sources work.

In short, intuition comes from (1) You. (2) from God (3) from evil spirits and other people. People in turn can transmit ideas which are intuitive thoughts from (2) and (3) and/or from themselves.

I want to stress that intuition is an ability which You Have, just as you have physical senses. Intuition can be used and developed mentally, if you have a mind, and spiritually; if you have a functional heart.

****Within yourself intuition, of any worth, comes from both head and heart. The mind has one form of intuition; which is a mirror for "seeing" how heart or spiritual intuition works. Between you and me; I do not think that mental intuition and heart intuition "feel" the same. While one cannot always trust feelings; feeling is often a good way to tell where your intuition is coming from.

Intuition to the point of true discernment of spirits and the thoughts of others is a gift from God; although a gift that can imitated and perverted in spiritualism.

In summary, intuition is a primary function of the human heart (which many call the soul). It is the "mind of the heart" if you will. It functions best when the other heart functions are working. Those are communion (your spirits ability to "talk" with God) and conscience (your ability to know what is right and wrong and to stand as a completely free person. (not bound to guilt or bondage imposed by others.)

I hope all this helps. It covers much ground. To really get a grip on what I have said you must "know" when you are operating in your mind and when you are "in the spirit."
Then, when you know what You are doing, you must be able to tell the sources. And this is where the Holy Spirit and Scripture comes in for verification.

After reading all the responses here is one definition: Mental intuition is a subliminal response by the human mind; spiritual intution is the mind of the heart in communion with the wisdom and the love of God.

Intuition is a spontaneous, instantaneous insight into the nature of things or the dynamic of a given situation. This insight occurs without conscious effort and without the assistance of reason. Its origins are debatable. Psychiatrists say that intuition comes from within, as the work of subconscious forces. Mystics attribute it to Zen, which is a kind of common consciousness or world-soul. Many Western poets attribute intuition to the Holy Spirit, who bestows intuition as a gift mainly to creative artists. And that's that.

We know that the senses take in far more information than we ever become directly conscious of - by necessity, or we'd be bombarded by the constant influx of impressions (as with autistics). I think "intuition" is simply when the senses have taken in information that unconsciously suggests a certain conclusion, and that conclusion makes its way to consciousness.

Say you're talking to somebody and you get the feeling that he's lying. There's nothing you can "put your finger on" that would suggest he is, but you have the feeling anyway. That's probably because he has been (unconsciously on his part) giving you those characteristic "tells" of a lying person, and you've picked up on them unconsciously; and this impression has gradually dawned on your consciousness.

It's a way of referencing the world. It's just as valid to ask where does logic and rational thinking come from. They are two ways of knowing. They both come with the package of being human, and interestingly, they can both be trained. Some of us rely more heavily on one rather than the other. Personality profiling can show from which point of reference we most comfortably and confidently orient ourselves. I rely more on my intuitive knowing than my rational knowing, but my rational knowing is always close behind. However, if I have to make a quick decision, I trust my intuition unequivocally.

Intuition is built into us from eons ago when mankind relied on "natural feelings" to survive from the ravages of the world. These days, we do not require these feelings so much and in turn are not so developed this way as we once were. Many people still have a heightened sense of this, which is a wonderful tool regardless of where you are at.

Intuition is the capacity for a neural network to complete a whole picture from smaller parts, even where large gaps are missing, and then to produce a valid and meaningful output in response to the reconstructed big picture.

What's so difficult about that?

Pattern Recognition.

There is the part of your mind you are aware about. You hear the voices in your head thinking about various topics and there is much that you can put into words. There is more to your brain than that, though. Your brain takes in a lot of input and categorizes it and matches it against patterns it has seen before. Most of this is done at a low enough level that you can't put that thought into words.

Intuition is where your mind matches a situation to a pattern (rightly or wrongly) and gives you a bias to think a certain way. You might not be able to express in words why you think that certain way about the situation, but it is still based on a lot fo pattern recognition.

If the brain had to translate everything you thought into words, it would take too long to think of anything.
