then why do soldiers get medals and recognition for killing other humans. Are governments and countries above God, such that they can kill against God's will?

If any of you have understood the Bible, then you should not have an enemy.
And for those soldiers who feel offended by this question, come on I know that the medals are given for saving fellow soldiers etc, but then you do that by killing the 'enemies' don't you? It's a kill game scotty. accept it.

Killing is a sin in any form self defence or not ( of human beings i mean) . Animals are not necessary qualify as the Bible did give man domion over them ( of course this does not give anyone any excuse to be cruel to them!)

If we asume that self defence is not a sin then we are assuming that God does not have the power to deliver in dangerous situations.

The apostles are proof that God can deliver and theres no need for you to kill anyone to get out of trouble.

Testimony
My father is one of those men that is very aggressive towards women. He abused my mother and us his children both physically and verbally. My mother was a streeet vendor because she had to bring home the bacon.

One night as she was coming home, ( she had to walk for about 2 and a half miles to get home) she passed my father at the usual place half drunk. As she neared home a voice said to her that my father was planning to kill her. She recognize this as the voice of God. God also told her where to find the Knife....

Suddenly she saw my father passed her really fast. So she huried and went home. When she got there he was in the house. He started asking for water and she told him to see if he could find any outside (we did not have running water andthe kitchen was outside).....

When he left for the kitchen, she pushed her hand underneath the matrass. She felt something realy cold. As she pulled it out and looked she realized that it had been a butcher's knife. One she had never seen before. She quickly pushed it in the case of her pillow and laid on the pillow.

That night my father woke up when he thoght she was asleep. She saw him searched desparately under the matrass. He search for quite some time. Then with a confusing look, he went back to bed.

In the morning she hammered the knife into the ground until the handle was not visible.......

He never asked about the knife to this very day......

So you see..God can deliver.

My mom was and is a Christian.

God is definitely not against killing. Have you read the Old Testament? Especially 1st and 2nd Samuel and 1st and 2nd Kings. There's one part in particular where God orders King Saul to kill an entire race of people, including the babies and even all of their livestock. Saul got into big trouble with God because he refused to kill the King and the livestock ( I Samuel 15:1-9). Maybe you're talking about some other God perhaps?

"Killing" is not always a sin.

The commandment should be translated "Thou shalt not murder". The word "kill" has changed in meaning over the 400 years since the King James Bible was translated.

If you read the Bible, it does permit killing in cases such as self-defense or the defense of another, and also distinguishes between accidental (manslaughter) and deliberate (first degree) murder.

If also permits capital punishment for crimes such as first degree murder, rape, kidnap[ing, etc.

If you read the Bible, it list several "heroes" who killed in defense of their families, people and country. There are times when war is necessary to either protect your own people or to stop an evil. The ability for a nation to make war is permitted in scripture under certain circumstances.

So not all "killing" is automatically a "sin" under the Bible.

In the time of war we are killing people & you can't understand this verse that says thou shall not kill, Now friend I am going to take this a little slow so you can see the picture. I hear everyday people saying thou shall not kill, & they don't even know what is meant by that, If you take that as it is without a revelation from God, then ask yourself, If you drive a car, look at all the bugs that hit your windshield, You killed them, or any small animal that jumps in front of your car & you could not miss them, Or let's look at the plant life, Yes the Plant life, they are live plants, do you eat corn, beans, Tomatoes, or whatever or if you mow your grass. don't you know you just have killed the top that was mowed. So you see, you can be so dogmactic about this subject, Now let's read some bible, BTW God said of EVERY TREE that grows out of the ground is good for food. Read Ecclesiastes 3:19 It speaks of there is a time for war & a time for peace, A time to kill & a time to heal, a time of love & a time of hate, time of war & a time of peace. Now do you want the correct interpretion of thou shall not kill, It means to kill for self gain, in which that killing will be called murder, In other words DO NOT MURDER FOR SELF GAIN.

If you are a believer-I remember reading passages in the bible that tells the reader that it is not a sin to be a soldier and kill in battle.

If you are a non-believer-Self-defence is definitly justified. And despite what most people seem to think these days, we are in iraq doing a good thing-killing people who would come here in a heartbeat and kill us.

Medals are for moral. I dont know if you ever received one, but let me tell you how nice it is to go back to your sleeping bag on the ground and look at something that says thank you for doing a job that ******* could never do.

Why are you asking a question you know nothing about, they don't give medals to soldiers for killing people they get medals for serving in the service and medals for not dying and medals for helping fellow soldiers and medals for getting shot and not dying, you don't know what the hell your talking about. and plus you got to realize you live under mans chosen rules not Gods, man's chosen government not God. man is not God get it straight.

Medals are given by men, not by God. God said to not kill, better still love enemies. That is very difficult, but however it's very far from killing them! I've never thought in men who said 'God is with us'. They replace God using Him for their interests. I don't wanna be at their place when they'll finally discover their mistakes!!!

MURDER is the sin. The commandment is "Thou shall not MURDER". Murder is usually pre-meditated with malice. Killing is a form of extreme punishment (death sentence, war, etc.) Most soldiers don't go to war WANTING to kill someone; but it happens.

I don't believe any medals are awarded specifically for killing; it's my understanding they are for SERVICE (i.e. putting THEIR lives on the line for their country.)

*edit*
I think it is YOU who does not understand the bible. It does NOT say we won't / don't HAVE enemies; it says to love / forgive your enemies and pray for those who persecute you. The number one enemy of all Christians is SATAN, and he will use every means available against the Christian. He leaves the non-believers alone - they are not a threat to him.

Sometimes God might use an Army for his will. Did you ever hear about king Davids army. I am not suggesting that the war in Iraq is or isn't Gods will though because I don't know but I do believe that we as a country should always pray to know what Gods will is. I assume that you are an atheist and don't care what my opinion is. But there it is.

Jesus and God both say it is ok to kill your enemies. The Quran even goes as far as to not only kill your enemy, but you can cut off their fingers as well.

For these reasons (and a whole lot more) I do not believe that he exists. For if he does, you all are following the most heinous murderer in all of Earth's history.

Note, Jesus depicts an "enemy" as anyone that does not wish for him to be king. Muhammad depicts an "enemy" as any non-Islam follower (infidel).
