I see some cars with plane sidemirrors and others with curved ones. What is the recommended type?

Theres no real recommendations.

"Curved" give you a wider view of the road behind you, although some people would argue the view is distorted, but its more then good enough to see where youve been.

"Plain" is just a normal mirror so in comparison has a smaller view, yet you can see perfectly.

I prefer "Curved" personally. i like to know whats going on everywhere

A plain mirror gives a limited view of what is behind you, and has more 'blind spots' than a curved (convex) mirror which gives you a much larger field of vision.
I have given this question a bit of thought, and I honestly can't remember the last time I saw a car fitted with a plain (exterior) mirror.

Planes don't have side mirrors you must be flying high.

The best compromise is a plain mirror with one of those stick on mini-mirrors to cover the blind spot.

To be honest, it's a refreshing change to see some drivers USE their mirrors....
