I think this is in some ways true, because (IMO, anyway) what makes a person smart is questioning. Intelligence comes from asking, investigating, finding new info on things.
The flip side is also true - questioning can lead to stronger beliefs, depending on what answers you find. The smartest people I know have all been either very strong in their faith, or atheists.

My point of view is that, the smarter you are, more religious you will be. if you are dumb then you will follow the religion blindly,
to an extent atheist are clever because they want scientific proof or every thing but their are things which are beyound the reach of scientists to give proof and this is the point where the religion comes in.
Atheist believe that their is no God.
To enter the religion of Islam you have to believe in the following statement "There is no God, but only one God
So I will congragulate the Atheist for believing in the first part of the islamic believe. the only thing remaining for him to believe it the secont part.
to make the atheist believe in the second part ask the athiest how this universe came into existance he will say the big bang occured due to some gasious form and bla bla bla.
so ask him who created this and bla bla bla.
the clever and smart people ask these question and they realise that there is a supreme power which is controling the whole affairs of this universe and all other universes or any that exists.

Smarter in what way, the way of the world?
"God uses the foolish things to confound the wise." This quote is from the Bible but I don't have the verse for it right now. It seems to apply to your statement.

True (from the blind belief point), but that is not the end. Some will later - through experience - come to know God exists.
There is a cycle - blind belief (theist), to atheist, to theist again (but much deeper and personal).

Irregardless of your mental capacity, it is individual choice to become an atheist. There are those with high IQ's that are devoutly religious and those that are not, same goes for those with average intelligence. Intelligence really has nothing to do with one religious choices.

It's not necessarily true, it's not necessarily false. There are smart people that stay religious, and there are smart people that become atheistic.
