I am not sure how many people are actually aware of what the police (specifically Mike Minton of the St. Bernard Parish) did to pets in New Orleans. The police made people who were being rescued leave their dogs w/ them "to be brought somewhere safe" and instead they used them for target practice. There is a case being brought against them but it is going slowly and the story isn't being talked about enough. If you are as disgusted and angry as I am, please talk about this to everyone you know. Email people, sign petitions, do whatever you can to make sure these cruel men are put behind bars for a long time. These men were not shooting them to take them out in one shot (they say for humane reasons), they were shooting these poor animals in the legs, stomache... it wasn't humane at all so that argument doesn't even come close to holding water. Lets help make sure they rot in hell.

nice how the link is not active , and just because some reporter writes it does not make it true , i know that animals had to be shot to keep them from starving or becoming dangerous after Katrina . and while it is sad for anyone to lose a pet . what was done . had to be done . i in my short time as a police officer have had to on more then one occasion shoot a animal . from dogs to deer . it's not a joyful thing , but it's part of the job

i guess Wikipedia is erroneous then.... The parish seat is Chalmette, the biggest city contained in the parish. the most populated component of the parish, contained in the parts close to the Mississippi River, is component of the recent ORLEANS METROPOLITAN section. exciting how guy above has no different remark yet to make a fact about geography. enable's concentration on the further major factor which replaced into the animals.

If it`s true , I feel all police officers involved should be charged . If found guilty of animal abuse , they should not only lose their jobs , but also sentenced to the maximum penalty for a crime of this kind . They should not be allowed to ever be in possession of a firearm again ......... ever !

The best way of getting attention to a travesty of this kind is through the media . e-mailing the papers , radio stations and tv stations is a good start . If enough people contact the police chief on a constant basis , maybe then something will be done .

Yeah I travel and spend much of my time in N.O. and I have to say I would feel safer being approached by a SUV full of gang members than the N.O.P.D.

Not to mention taking weapons from legal owners during Katrina when the police weren't capable of "protecting" or serving.

But they did kill animals for target practice and to think an animal is going to starve because of not having a human feed it is idiocy.

This is an unproven exagerration. There were animals that were killed so that they would not have to drown or starve. The people who could not bring food, medicines or common sense with them to shelter did bring animals. You can't have cats, dogs, etc running around. There would have been chaos and complaints that the authorities allowed "viscious animals" to run loose. Sometimes sacrifices have to be made.

Judging from my experiences with the New Orleans police, this is not surprising at all. I am more afraid of the cops in New Orleans than I am of any mugger.
