I was on the bus one day and sat across from a Muslim woman and her children. A blind man got on the bus with his seeing-eye dog and sat down. The woman and her teenaged daughter got all uppity and looked insulted and finally rang the bell and dragged the children off the bus, walking passed the dog as though it was diseased. What was that all about?

The reason I ask here is ... I was told that Muslims are not allowed to be near dogs. I simply wondered why.

Well its not they have a problem with dogs. In the muslim religion dogs are considered to be something called "nijis". Mulsims have to pray 5 times a day and if they come into contact with anything that is nijis then they have to go through a cleaning procedure before they can pray. Some people who are muslim LOVE dogs but don't go near one because they respect their religion. However when a woman has her period then she is considered unclean and is not allowed to pray during the time she has it. Therefore she can come into contact with anything nijis during that time.

There is no "hatred" in Islam against dogs. Each animal has a specific purpose and that is how it is treated in Islam. A dog is a domesticated animal and very faithful. One can have it as a pet for safeguarding. However, Islam is a religion of cleanliness. Muslims pray 5 times a day and they perform abolution before that. They cannot pray in dirty state. This is also why you must have noticed that muslims wash themselves with water every time they use the rest room. So cleanliness is very important for them. In fact, there is a saying of the Prophet Mohamad (peace be upon him) that cleanliness is half the faith meaning that a believer will not keep himself physically unclean once he is spiritually clean (i.e. a believer)
There is no strict injunction but generally looking at this cleanliness pattern, it is not recommmended to have dogs inside the house. Like in the West where dogs are hugged, allowed in bedrooms, living rooms etc, its not so in Islam mainly for hygienic reasons. if one has to keep pet dog, it should be outside (in the backyard etc).

I'm Muslim and i LOVE DOGS DO DEATH. BUT ALOT of Muslims are discouraged from keeping dogs inside their homes, as the Prophet has been reported as saying that angels do not enter into a house that has a dog. And "Purifying a container that a dog has licked (in order for human’s to use it) is done by washing it seven times, the first washing being with dirt". So a dog is concidered dirty and that's why alot of people are disgusted by them.
But this doesnt mean that you runaway if a dog is present. Also alot of hadiths from the prophet indicate that dogs are permitted to live among people.

Well, Muslims have no Problems with dogs.. This family was probably scared.. Though it's Makrooh for a Muslim to Have a dog which is useless "Not for Guard, Land, hunting, or the like".. As it consumes lots of money for no reason, while there are Homeless people freezing in the streets...

some ppl take the dog thing too far. yes there are certain rules about the cleanliness of dogs but islam is not anti-dog
the opinions of muslims vary on this subject....
there is a scholar name khaled abou el fadl and he has dogs --i think he wrote about it on his site http://www.scholarofthehouse.com or maybe it is in one of his books or something. Like all things some ppl agree with him and some do not.
I think this woman obviously took this too far. But maybe she was on her way to the mosque and was afraid the dog might rub up on her or something.
It's become a huge culural thing in some countries to be anti-dog. It is sad.

Possibly just hates dogs... She could be one of the few that do not recognize a seeing eye dog for what it is.

That sounds like an isolated incident. I don't think ALL muslims have problems with dogs. Pigs, OTOH, is a different story.
