well To correct the idiot above...Wiccan's generally do not hold in the belief of hell. Generally my response to such an ignorent comment would be "Your hell, you go"
as to how to become wiccan..its more a way of believeing than anything else. I know many wiccan's who still believe in god in a more traditional way. Continue researching various sites and reading...go with what feels right for you. It is not so much about the spells as the faith that what you want can happen if you think on it hard enough.
Essentially a spell is just a prayer in a different form.
I'd be glad to talk with you if you wish to discuss my beliefs and will try to answer your questions.
It is important to know the main thing. Wicca is about doing no harm to others. It is about appreciating the earth and its bounty, about nature and energies within it. Saying a few words and burning some incense will not a wiccan make, unless the belief, the faith...is there.

Former wiccan, now christo pagan.
Why are you interested in Wicca? If you believe in God, why the interest in becoming wiccan? It isn't going to get you anywhere that being a good christian would. The biggest differance in Wiccans and a good decent openminded christian is the belief in sexuality. When you boil it all down to the bare tacts, Wiccans, Pagans and your various flavors of christianity aren't that much different. Christianity has got the words of christ, Wicca the Rede.
If your looking to rebel, it's not the right religion for you. If your looking for shock value, again not the right religion for you. On the surface it seems that way, but any serious student of wicca or paganism will tell you different.
If your interested because of the spells. Well you can look at folk magic. There are also plenty of christian mystical things. And no, no matter how much practice you do, your aren't gonna throw fireballs down mainstreet. Nor are you going to be able to freeze people or do any of the spells you see in charmed.
If your interested in the spell aspect
Scott cunninghams books are good. His beginner books on wicca are also pretty decent. You can look at pennsylvania pow wow, stay away from ravenwolf. Google up folk magic and start from there. YOu can look up cunning men and cunning women. Many of which were christian. Read triumph of the moon by hutton, that way you can really tell if you want to get into it. Objective viewpoint.
www.witchvox is good info. I'd stay away from the forums, until you know a bit more, that way you can seperate the bs from the real stuff.

I'm not Wiccan but I'm Pagan.
No witches aren't evil. Its a smear campaign by the Christian church. The base of Wicca though is believing and following the God and the Goddess. With out that belief, you just really love nature. Spells are usually a ritualistic form of prayer. Christians have magic too, its just called miracles.
If you are really interested just read what you can. paganspath.com is pretty good.

Another contributor spoke of witchvox .. that is a great starting point. There is also a Yahoo group you might like called WATW (Wiccans around the World) .. that is doing a great job of helping new people find resources. But I would like to address your core issues. Firstly, wicca is a pagan path, but not the only path. Second, you do not have to give up a belief in God to follow pagan/wiccan spirituals paths. However, there is a huge tendancy in pagan ways to give honor to the Goddess also ... in many paths, the Goddess is the source ... these are things you need to learn and study to decide what you find true for yourself. And thirdly, and most importantly ... there is NOTHING evil about wicca or pagans. Satan and Hell (evil) are things created by other religions back in the old days to distract the country dwellers from their beliefs and replace them for political / power reasons.
Don't think that wearing black, being "goth", vampirism, etc is about wicca. I am a professional woman in my 50's and proudly wear my pentacles daily with no problems. Some of my best friends are of other beliefs ... its called respect. Study much, learn well, and decide for yourself what is right for you.
Blessed Be!

Tessa, allow me to answer the last question first. Yes, Wicca IS real. Wicca is a Religion and as such, we give honor to BOTH a Goddess and a God (although there are exceptions to that (Dianic Wicca, being one)). We also acknowledge the Divine as being manifest in the Natural world around us, which kind of gives non-Wiccans the impression that we worship Nature. It is not Nature that we worship it is the Divine, and nature is only the conduit through which we do so. Wicca do not worship idols, we worship in front of statues (again there are many exceptions to this as well (Green Witches come to mind)). Christians do not worship the cross, they worship what the cross represents, it is precisely that same principle in Wicca. We conduct our ceremonies during the full moon (some also the new moon), and eight Sabbats which are spread out over the year (What many Wicca call the Wheel of the Year). These celebrations re-live certain phases in the life ages of the Gods and Goddesses and are done in commemoration of these Divine events. The Wicca recognize the existence of good and evil as inherent is ALL things, everything and everyone has the capability for BOTH (Even the Divine). Evil therefore, is an integral part of everything and one can not have one without the other. The key to this is balance, Wicca hold the concept of balance to be one of the core principles of the universe and al which exists. So, to answer your first question, there is NO being which is totally good or totally evil, only the intent of the individual determines whether a thing or an action is for good or evil. Therefore, as there is NO being assigned the nature of total evil (ie, a devil) it is impossible for us to worship such a being. NOw, as many member of Judeo-Christian-Islamic Faiths are so fond of stating in unequivocal terms, "if you do not worship the god of light and love, then you are worshiping the devil". They fail to realize that in order to worship anything or anyone, then worship MUST be the intent. There is no such thing as unknowingly worshiping anyone. We can NOT worship a concept which does NOT exist to us, therefore we do NOT worship the "Devil", as the "Devil" is NOT one of the Divine being concepts which exists within the Faith system of Wicca. It is as simple and direct as that. Does this make sense to you? Brightest Blessings, Raji the Green Witch

To answer you question, if you do beleive in God (Christian) Then you cant do Wiccan.
People in the Church beleive that God is the creator and therefore can heal people, because he created all the universerve, you and me.
That means that I have had to sacrifice reiki for instance, because that healing, which does work, is of my own power and energy and not of Gods?
It still doesnt make sense to me, though because God doesnt always heal people if one prays, yes miracles do happen though Gods grace, but what about those people who have been for prayer and still have cancer. God blesses the surgeons hands to perform the operation? If that is true then reiki and wiccan is the same.
I am in a relationship with God and he does speak to me.
I am still trying to figure out what is right and wrong though. God will lead me.
PS Christians cannot judge or condemn people for there beliefs or choices. God gave everyone free will to do as they please. The may not condone Wiccan etc, but that is there belief that it is wrong and not of God. They see it as idolising oneself as a God instead of worshiping and giving glory to God.
God Bless!

We're all different, love; that's why you are confused. For example, some witches are very feminist, and rarely have anything to do with men. Some are very much the opposite. Some do circles on the sabbats (equinoxes, solstices and halfway between each, making eight per year), some also do esbats, either on the full moon or the dark moon or both. Some have very formal rituals with a lot of magickal tools and robes and chanting and a lot of things to memorize; others just do what feels natural. Some rarely do rituals connected to the calendar, but do private rituals based on when they feel they need them.
Some have learned from others, either in person or in books, or both; some are entirely experimental and self-taught.
There are any number of on-line sources, but one I can recommend is Abbott's Inn School of Magick, because it is a Yahoo Group and free. It is run by two close friends of mine, the woman who initiated me and the Arch-Druid who did the blessing of her baby girl when I became one of five "goddess-mothers" (sort of like the fairy godmothers in "Sleeping Beauty").
I won't recommend any particular book, because the lady who works on Abbotts Inn (and the DruidWicca Coven, and the Great Wild Beast Furtherment Society, all Yahoo Groups) is the "librarian" of the crowd. I left most of my old books behind in one or more moves over the years, and the ones I kept are too esoteric for Yahoo Answers.

As my roomie (Ivy Pandora) said-It's more than a few words and a bit of incense. Would you pray to a christian god if you didn't believe in him? Of course not. Why do rituals in the name of ours if you don't believe in them?
There are christian wiccans, though in my opinion the term alone comes off hypocritical-You believe in one main god, but you believe in gods and goddesses too? Eh?
Don't get me wrong. It's possible... but ipes.
Personally I'm not evil and I'm rather eclectic in my pagan beliefs (though a lot of it is pulled from shamanism). So... before you delve further into all of this, I suggest you completely banish the notions of 'evil' and 'good' from your head in terms of religion. It's all opinion... and while it may reflect upon you as good or bad, an opinion can never be either to the original person who had it.
I'm not trying to be a jerk here-but most likely the reason it's all so confusing is because you're still adhering to christian standards. Open your mind. It'll make sense. Ask more specific questions if you want some good, solid answers. =) I'll be more than happy to answer if I see them (or you im me/email me).

I have to tell you there is no easy way. This isn't instant religion. If you are confused then slow down on what you are reading and take time to understand it. Just because you read a lot doesn't mean that you are necessarily learning what you need to. If you have read a lot of stuff and you still don't know what they do, I'm not sure you're ready to take the step. It's not difficult at all.
I agree with another answerer who said that you are trying to adhere to christian beliefs and that won't work well.

i wonder though, you say you want to become wiccan, but you believe in god and think wiccans are evil, and you don't want to be evil? you don't really make any sense, and you certainly don't know enough about it to "become" wiccan
wiccans of course are not evil. spells are much like prayers, with a kick! there is a god and goddess, we respect nature and feel we are a part of it, not above it. there are many different pagan paths besides wicca.
