I have had six dogs with seizures and most were on Phenabarbatol or Potasium Bromide and any meds has side effects.

How many seizures a day does he have??? If it is once a month I would not put on meds. Most seizures last only a minute or less.

The only time I would put on meds is if they were having seizures every day & sometimes more in a dayHave you taken him to vet???

I have seen dogs live happy, healthy lives on sodium bromide and phenobarbital.

What IS traumatic to the dog is NOT being on the medicine and being allowed to seizure. Seizures can cause mental health problems that can seriously alter the demeanor your happy dog.

The medicine doesn't prevent ALL of the seizures, but it SURE does make them less frequent and far between. I would suggest putting him on the medicine, and if it controls the seizures adequately..... be happy. I am sure the dog would like to live out life on the seizure medicine than to be put down.

depends on his age to be honest
they can have a reasonably normal life span in spite of the problems caused by barbituates but only if the seizures are well controlled
to be honest the dog knows nothing about the actual seizure they are disorientated after but should settle again quickly
it really is dependant on the quality of life he has in between seizures

I dogsat once or twice for a Eskie with epilepsy - he did fine on the drugs for years - ran in dog agility to the national tournament finals level (on epilepsy meds) and lived to well in his teens. I saw no visible side effects while I sat for him (and no seizures for the week I had him).
why don't you talk to the folks on this support list for owners of dogs with epilepsy, before you make any perminate decisions.

I had a poodle with epilepsy she did fine on Potassium Bromide which I was able to purchase in granular form and make my own solution a little squirt on her food and she was good. Phenobarbital was not good for her as it made her dopey there are other drugs out there. I contacted CSU vet school when I was not happy with my vets answer. Potassium Bromide was the drug of choice for a long time, then newer drugs came out.

properly the belief with taking anti depressant medicine long term is to completely regulate concepts chemical compounds/concepts chemical receptibility so as which you will get off the medicine and not be depressed anymore. After taking medicine for a on a similar time as your physique receives used to it, and preliminary area outcomes tend to bypass away or get much less intense. i think of the main considerable situation isn't lots the long term area outcomes however the outcomes you are able to journey getting off the medicine, as maximum anti depressants must be weened off slowly extremely than stopped unexpectedly. maximum anti depressants could have withdrawal sort outcomes whilst stopped. i've got been on particularly some anti depressants over the years, the only actual long term outcomes are everlasting ameliorations to my temper and psychological state. i've got not observed the rest somewhat.

Repeated seizures can cause brain damage, so whatever you decide, be kind and either treat him or end his suffering. Don't just leave him unmedicated and having seizures on a regular basis.
