I always thought I was ultra-prepared when I went on trips, but last winter I learned a valuable lesson.
I had only planned a short weekend trip but my granddaughters got sick so I stayed a few extra days to help. When I got home, my house was freezing, all my plants were dead and I had no water upstairs. The pilot light had gone out in the furnace and all my pipes froze. I had massive damage in the house. So now, the most important thing I do when I go away is to have someone check on my house periodically to avoid another disaster.

Clean all the dustbins from any rubbish. It's a good time to place inside the house food-poison or traps for cockroaches or mice.
