does a vw golf 1.8 engine use a lot of petrol

In general automotive no it won't use much petrol. However, keep in mind that the intake numbers aren't a direct comparison to fuel economy. There are many other things that determine this.
For example my brother 2.5L Mazda3 gets better gas mileage than my S2000's 2.0L and both are 4 cylinders. An F1 car might use a 2.4L V10 and get 4 mpg.

i drive a 02 gti 1.8t and wait are you talking bout the N/A euro motor? ot the turbo 1.8?

anywho i just got back from a road trip from PA to NC and i got over 430 miles to a 14.5 gallon gas tank

s its pretty good on gas

No but my 6.0 liter V-8 engine that makes over 400 HP can!

My GTI 1.8T gets about 28mpg on the highway and around 24mpg city driving. I love it.

4 cylinder, no. 4 cylinders use the least amount of fuel.
example- i have audi a4- 4 cylinder- and my BF has a honda accord special edition- 6 cylinder- and his car uses so much more gas than mine
