1 The LORD said to Moses and Aaron, 2 "Say to the Israelites: 'Of all the animals that live on land, these are the ones you may eat: 3 You may eat any animal that has a split hoof completely divided and that chews the cud.

4 " 'There are some that only chew the cud or only have a split hoof, but you must not eat them. The camel, though it chews the cud, does not have a split hoof; it is ceremonially unclean for you. 5 The coney, [a] though it chews the cud, does not have a split hoof; it is unclean for you. 6 The rabbit, though it chews the cud, does not have a split hoof; it is unclean for you. 7 And the pig, though it has a split hoof completely divided, does not chew the cud; it is unclean for you. 8 You must not eat their meat or touch their carcasses; they are unclean for you.

Let us go back to the time the earth and man were created. We were not even supposed to eat animals.
Genesis: 1:29 Then God said, "I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food.

Our bodies with the plants for food were enough to support our lives. It was after the fall of man that man is shown eating animals. That is the funny part, that even when it is stated that they should eat fruits, the first Jews even started making animal offers of fatty animal to god.

Well if they understood it like that it is not surprise that after seeing the pig revolting in the mud they see it as an uncleaned animal. Jesus represent modern days mankind, He came to show us what God is really like, and to do away with many taboos.

Nevertheless, as somebody said in another answer, the pork meat is one of the most contaminated animal meats, because of the way they live, they can hold bacterias and germs that are nothing to them but bad to us. It is also true about the worms in the pork that can log in our muscles flesh and even make it to the brain. Today though is not just pig but also other animals and even plants that have contamination of some sort.

Even as a Christian I don't like much eating meat, or eating any food three times a day. That is why fasting is still a healthy option.

This isn't really an answer to the question - I think there are some really good answers above, but one thing worries me.

Fair enough that Deut and Lev state that eating pig is unclean, and that some religions still follow this and believe this to be the case, but people don't still stone people to death or any of the other punishments set out in these books for sinners, so I don't understand why the pig is forever cast as a 'dirty' animal, by people, when no one follows the majority of the other laws mentioned anymore?

I mean, according to these books, if you're raped, you should be stoned to death along with your attacker, and if you have an affair you should be put to death. We don't follow those rules, so why the one about pigs (in these days of health regulations and sanitization)?

Just curious - I'm not saying we should bring back stoning!!!

Judaism and Islam do not believe in the word of Jesus Christ and he said that nothing that us, as humans, can put in the body is unclean, only what comes out therefore meaning that folowers of Jesus Christ can eat any meat/food as nothing that physically goes into the body is unclean. Therefore Jewish and Islamic people still beleive that pork is unclean because it has split hooves and doesn't chew the cud.

So it isn't a typing error or a mistake, just the fact Christians decide to listen to Jesus.

And to answer your question, eating pork should not be forbidden in Christianity because it is written in the gospels that there is no longer any unclean foods. Jews and Muslims do not follow this, so believe pork is unclean. I think what Jesus said as a law is just as, if not more, comprehensible than the laws in Leviticus!
For example, the laws regarding sex, Jesus reinforced in the gospels, however with this one regarding food, he made it clear that it no longer matters.

Christianity doesn't forbid anything. The belief in Jesus the messiah sets us free. If you want you can make a religion of Christianity but the true believers are free and were set free for the purpose of freedom. These other two religions are truly religions and so have all sorts of rules and laws to live by. Jesus did give us a new law and that was to love. If you love then you need no other laws or rules because the perfect law of love will rule and guide you perfectly. In the case of Judaism the perfect law of God was given to man in order to help man to live in a higher state than man had attained but all along the way of revealing this perfect law of love men didn't get it and resisted God's efforts and so God gave them a lot of rules and codes. One of these is the food laws and these I think should be used for their wisdom and their help for us to live better.

If they had any brains they wouldnt eat pork.

Uncooked pork meat or undercooked pork meat is the only thing that gives brain worms.

No one really knows that.

You dont believe me? Google: brain worms and see what I mean.

Also, pets that eat pork meat are bound to get serious diseases as well. Why? because pigs do not sweat. They retain their urine in the blood.

In Islam, God has allowed the consumption of pork in the LAST resort only!! meaning you can eat it if it was a life and death situation.

It is last resort food, not something you should eat when there are cleaner meat out there thats not infested with potentially harmful germs.

Edit: Jesus's sacrifice doesnt change the fact that pigs retain their urine in their own blood and are scavengers.

The Lord said to Moses and Aaron, "Say to the Israelites..."

He did not say to Joseph, Jacob, Isaac and Abraham, "Don't eat pork." He did not say to anyone after the resurrection, "Don't eat pork." The command to eat only kosher food was for Israel only, along with many other commands that applied only to those people, in the country where they lived, at that time.

There is a story about why Muslims can't eat pork and drink alcohol.
A night before an important battle muslim soldiers got drunk and ate too much, thus making them incapable of fighting and it was said that alcohol and pork be forbidden in Islam.

This was not a ritualistic command, but sound health advice, but Jesus said that it is not what goes in your mouth that defiles you, but what comes out of your mouth that defiles you.

Personally, I eat very little pork.

The OT was written for the Jew, God's chosen people, and since they do not believe Jesus was the Messiah it still is exclusively their book. Christians read the OT because about one-fourth of the OT is prophesy pertaining to the coming Messiah with unbelievable references to the manner of death of the Messiah, which describes the death of Jesus over 400 years before His birth.

The NT was written for the Jew and the Gentile, which is everyone.

This directive has more to do with obedience than whether or not pork will do us harm
And its part of the Old Testament.
Jesus did away with all that.
He replaced the 600 laws of the Jewish system with just two.
(Matthew 22:37-40) He said to him: “‘You must love Jehovah your God with your whole heart and with your whole soul and with your whole mind.’ 38 This is the greatest and first commandment. 39 The second, like it, is this, ‘You must love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 On these two commandments the whole Law hangs, and the Prophets.”
It was the prophets of the O.T. that instituted the 600 laws in the first place. So Jesus was not going against what God wants, but instituting God's NEW SYSTEM.

yes, it should be banned like in France.

At least in France they have tried to combat islamaphobia by closing down all the charity soup kitchens to the homeless as some served pork and some of the homeless might be muslim which could be offensive.
