I lost 35 lbs and have kept it off and my body looks pretty good, if I do say so myself :) BUT, I did not do any kind of a special diet. Instead, I tried to pay attention to eating food that I knew would contribute to my health. I also started doing yoga and walking and became addicted to it. It didn't take me hours in the gym to lose weight. Here are some things to take and some things to avoid:
* eat natural, whole foods. Forget "diet" foods like Atkin bars or something because they are loaded with preservatives and things that cause your body to retain water and toxins.
*limit starches. I had to eliminate wheat completely because I'm sensitive to it, but also limit rice, corn, potatoes, pasta, etc.
*Stick to vegetables and use olive oil and apple cider vinegar when you eat them. Also, go organic whenever you can. Really, this seems too simple, but I haven't gained the weight back in over 2 years, even after getting married, moving, school, mother-in-law issues, etc. It's about finding balance and health for your body and not so much about looking like Nicole Richie.

dont look at diet as something to "go on" - diet is a way of life and you have to change yours.
find daily calorie intake calculator on the net, enter all your stats and it will tell you how many calories you need a day to maintain, take off 300-400cal off that number and thats how much you need to lose.
eat 5-6 small meals a day (eat every 2-3 hours - it optimizes your metabolism)
5-8 servings of fruit and veggies a day
8 glasses of water
have complex carbs for breakfast - they give you energy
have protein (lean meat, legumes etc) for dinner - repairs muscle
cardio exercise 4-6 times a week for 30-50min (ideally 45min because the first 20-30min body burns carbs and only then starts burning fat), light weight training (more muscle=faster metabolism)
dont consume foods that are made of white flour (white bread, cakes, pasta etc.), sugar loaded foods (cookies, icecream, candy etc) and nothing fried, oily.
ofcourse you can spoil yourself once in a while with a little treat:)
