Last things first: Exodus 20:4-5 is somewhat badly translated in most Christian bibles. The original Hebrew does not translate as "jealous," but as "impassioned" or "passionate."
As to why it is a sin, I believe that when we seek to have something that belongs to another - whether it be a person, a posession, or anything else - we do harm to ourselves, to the object of our covetousness (which to me is more the sense of the term usually translated as "jealousy"), and to the rightful "owner" that object, and harm is something that we have no right to do to any of God's creations, save for self-defense and necessity.

God made the rules - he never said he'd follow them - he'd just cast disobedient PEOPLE into the depths of hell, to burn for all eternity in a lake of molten lava. Don't be so fussy with the details of who does what - God sounds like such a great guy - just let him have his fun!

God created us and he deserves the praise for doing so.
He does not want people worshipping other gods, because He knows it will mean trouble for people. Only god has our best interests at heart.

You also have to remember that God has stated that our ways are not His ways and such.
