Maybe they have never really had a strong relationship with their mothers; so they look for the love they didn't get from their mothers, in their girlfriends.

There's some indirect evidence that a tendency to homosexuality runs in families - probably genetic in origin. There is also probably a strong (intrauterine, possibly by exposure to increasing doses of female hormone) environmental factor in males; a woman's first son is more than likely to be completely hetero, & the probability of homo tendencies or completely homo orientation increases with each subsequent son. I don't think this happens with girls, though, perhaps because female hormone is normal for them.

Most of us at a pinch could be satisfied by homosex or heterosex - look what happens in prisons. Also my two tomcats try to mount each other when no females available, but it never works because both want to go on top. A goat I once had would accept the billy (just) but was really a lesbian & chased the other females all round the paddock when either she or they were on heat.

Another factor is experiential. If a girl's first successful encounter is being seduced by another woman, she might learn to prefer that (same can happen with boys) - but perhaps without altogether killing desire for the opposite sex.

There are a range of inputs, & which one weighs with any given person might be unpredictable. It just happens, that's all.
