Have someone been taking codeine for a long time and stopped it gradually? How have you done it and is it severe? I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia and it is more severe now after the birth of my son 7 months ago. I have been constantly on different OTC pain meds since. A rumatologist prescribed me to take 30-60mg codeine with aspirin every 6 hours as needed. I have pain everyday, so I take Nurofen every second day to avoid my body getting used to codeine. I am afraid it will build an immune against the codeine if I take it everyday and will not relieve the pain effectively. Do you think my pain is worse because of an rebound of all the pain meds or is it extra strain of the baby. On Effexor XR 150mg as well that helps for depression.

Thinking of stopping Amitripyline rumatologists prescribed me 6 days ago, because it makes me feel tired in the morning. Any advise?

I took codeine for migraines years ago. It's highly addictive if used often, for a long period of time and taken at a high dosage. I went cold turkey...had no choice since my doc switched me to Darvocet. Yep, I felt crappy!!! So gradually stopping would be best! 30-60mg isn't a whole lot (I was on a much higher dosage!), so I think you are on the right track with how you are reducing the usage of it and then stopping. I have built up an immunity to pain meds since I’ve taken for so many years. I was given morphine at the ER when I had a blood clot in my lung. They could have given me a piece of candy instead...LOL! So they then gave me nubane (not spelled right), and it worked. I know how painful fibromyalgia is...talk to your doc regarding your concerns, I'm sure there is a non-codeine painkiller that you could use instead. With what I know about fibromyalgia, I know that any additional stress on the body will cause more pain. I would talk to your doc regarding your medicine concerns since you are taking a few. Some medicines can work against each other, and I’m not sure if mixing Nurofen is a good idea. Different combinations of med’s can be hard on our internal organs. Regarding the Amitripyline: This is mostly used for anxiety and most likely will make you feel sleepy/tired. That is why this drug should be taken at bedtime (or an hour prior) so the sleepy/tired feeling should be gone by morning. I'd give it a try or talk to your rumatologist about another medication that won't make you tired in the morning. Best wishes for your health!!!

- amitripyline: good medication for fibromyalgia. usually people do develop a tolerance to the sleepiness. you may consider taking it earlier in the evening or cut the tablet in half.
- effexor is very helpful in depression and also can be very helpful in chronic pain
- your increase in pain is probably related to the new baby in many ways, body habitus changes, carring of new baby, poor sleep quality. You may also be metabolizing the pain medication faster especially if you are breast feeding

Manage the pain first. My mom was on Diludid for pain and was concerned about addiction. Trust me...treat the pain 1st. Also with amytripoline....the tired feeling will pass.
