No one knows for sure, be there are an estimated 12 million illegal immigrants in the US. I don't know how many legal immigrants. Most come from Mexico. We have the same problems with immigrants that you do. If you came to the US from Europe, chances are no one would notice you.

We have legal immigrants from all over, we let in about 1 million each year.
We have between 12 and 20 million illegal aliens, about 60% of them from Mexico, 30% from other latin american countries, and the rest from all over.
Generally we don't have a problem with the legal immigrants, although 1 million is too many in my opinion. The legal ones learn our language, follow our laws, assimilate, etc.
The illegals are invaders, and most of them from Mexico are racist nationalists who hate the USA and think they are "reclaiming" or "reconquering" the southwestern USA, even though their ancestors never lived here (the Apaches made sure of that), and their empty claim was inherited from Spain.

EVERYBODY who comes to the legally by following our laws of immigration is WELCOME to immigrate to the US!!
Coming from the EU, you would be welcomed with open arms, as are the countless LEGAL immigrants from countries all over the world.
What we in the US are objecting to so angrily is our government's attempt to grant legal status to over 12 million illegal aliens (those who have crossed our borders illegally or remained in the states after their visas expire). Additionally, if the bill passes, these newly "legal" aliens would qualify for untold benefits at the expense of the American taxpayer.
Not only does this tell the whole world that our laws don't actually matter, it shows them that we will REWARD the lawbreakers!
And as far as which nationals are causing the largest problem, it's Mexico, but only because the border between us is so poorly guarded. However, the majority of Americans don't care WHAT country immigrants are from as long as they come to the US legally and want to become Americans!

You can't compare the EU with the vast unpatrolled borders of the United States. You can fit the whole EU inside part of the US!
OUR PROBLEM is ILLEGAL ALIENS.
They aren't immigrants--they are law breakers! And should be jailed-and deported! Our police force put everyone else in jail-people who smoke pot or do coke---people who don't pay child support-steal 401K from corporations and on.
If our frigging INS would enforce the law--and had enforced the laws--we wouldn't have this problem now. No one talks about how crappy the INS have performed their jobs--and no one seems to even care.
ILLEGALLY ENTERING my country is a crime and Should be treated as such!

What Latin immigrants would you have in the EU?
Your illegals are coming from Africa.

If you came legally, you would be welcomed. Our problem is those who come here illegally with an attitude of "you owe me."
