One of my 2 sisters and her husband lived & worked in NYC for a long time and later Long Beach out on Long Island. They now live in Calif but my brother-in-law's parents live in Fort Lee NJ.

We live and work in Metro Washington DC and decided why not do what all the tourists do visting the Nation's Capitol being obtain lodging out along stops serviced by the Metrorail? Anyway one spring vacation we made reservations at a COMFORT SUITES in New Jersey that was fairly new and it included breakfast, and would drive over and pay for all day parking like $9 or $10 and catch the Path? commuter train into the Big Apple along with all the local commuters. (Note don't look out your hotel windows bec it will be obvious when NYC was being built, they had to dump their trash somewhere and that part of NJ has very industrious landscape)

Though my wife who have preferred staying inside the city, surpsrisingly my sister and her family from Calif were also visiting at the same time and her comment that they too stayed in NJ kept my wife quiet the rest of the vacation...

FYI street parking in NYC is rather confusing and we did once get an expensive ticket on a daytrip before. If you drive and decide on getting a room at one of the hotels inside the city, parking is extra.

Best of Luck!

look on priceline, orbitiz, and those sites and get names of midtown hotels and prices and then enter the hotel name . com and go directly to hotel website. you get to see pictures / etc and you will find nice hotels for good prices. when you stick to brand names - you get charged a premium just for the name and not for a better hotel. and when you stick to priceline - orbitiz, etc prices, you are paying them their cut of up to $35 per day for your stay (a big big rip off) and their reservations are not (not) guaranteed so you can arrive and find someone else got your room. Do a little work and do it yourself is always safest and best. We pay as little as $59 per night in best seasons for a really nice room - and we are out except to sleep anyway so extras are not necessary.

There is a Super 8 in midtown Manhattan (around E. 46th St, I think) that I heard is pretty cheap, and relatively decent.

It might be more than $100, but not much more.

1 suggestion from a native New Yorker...

Second Home in the East Village

You'll have to share a bath to get in under your budget, but it's a cool little place (with private baths too, for a bit more) that is in the midst of entertainment, cool shopping, etc. And very close to a major subway station with a LOT of trains to get you all over the city.

I have friends who have stayed there and said they liked it...but they aren't very fussy.

Try the New York tourism website. There may be youth hostels, YMCA or church group accomodations, even universities.
Hotels are probably the last place to look for cheap accomodation, Try Craigs list too.

If you want to pay that per hour. Otherwise, you're looking at minimum twice that for a decent one per night.
