Protein helps gain weight but that weight can be muscle or fat. To build muscle, add some exercise too (resistance training, weight lifting etc.).

Well the primary use of Protein shakes is too repair muscles quicker than normal. You can gain mass easier with the higher carb protein shakes. The thing that someone said above about eating too much protein damages your kidneys is right if you eat normal and loads of protein. But if its all balanced as it usually is with bodybuilders you'll be fine. And health mags will only tell you to take whey protein if you can afford it.

honestly it depends how much you take and what's in it . remember protein shakes have different calorie contents. Bottom line is if you take in more calories than you burn then you'll definitely gain weight no matter how healthy you eat.Either eat less or exercise more.combination of both is recommended.
on the other hand if your weight training the weight gain is probably due to the fact that you've gained muscles even if you lost fat, because muscle weighs more than fat

You want to gain muscle right??!!

Protein shakes are good if you're using them following an exercise regime. 4 meals a day is ok -- I eat 6 healthy meals.

eating just before you go to bed is probably not favourable.

no. u re doing it wrong. only protein shake doesn't help to gain weight. there re several types of shakes: protein, 30%protein and 70% carbs and30% carbs and 70% protein. so for gaining mass u should consu,e the one with 70% of carbs and only 30% of proteins. proteins don't get stored in your body so excess of proteins is flashed out from your body . so if u re consuming too much protein u re making your kidneys work more, which may damage them. also your body need calcium for processing protein. it takes it from bones. so i would suggest u do not take excess protein and try reading stuff in health magazines
