Distillation is the process whereby water is boiled, recaptured and condensed into a liquid form without the impurities it carried in solution before boiling. Most automotive batteries use sulphuric acid as a key ingredient to store electric power, used to start your car (and in hybrids, to power the car). Over time, some of the water in the acid solution evaporates and should be replaced so that the plates in the battery are covered with the acid solution.

Distilled water can be drunk. But the human body is composed of a vast variety of chemicals in solution. Why is Gatorade such a wonderful thirst quencher? Because in addition to water, it also contains a mix of 'electrolytes' which are essential to keeping the human body going and many of them are perspired out of the body when exercising or heavily active. Replacing ALL the chemicals your body needs, not just the water, is more efficient and healthier. Drinking too much water, even tap water, can kill you (as some former radio people learned a couple months ago, when a young mother died from drinking too much water in a contest).

Distilled water is water that has been boiled, the steam which is produced is collected and condensed. It contains almost no impurities, (depending on the constriction and materials of the equipment). It is used in batteries because it contains no or next to no chloride. Chloride will kill a lead-acid battery quickly as it prevents the proper formation of lead oxide or sulphate crystals (can't remember which) as the battery is discharged or charged. Tap water usually contains an amount of salt, which we do not notice because it is in low concentration and we are used to it. This salt is half chloride. Though it may be in low concentration, it is enough to damage a battery.

Batteries only require a small amount of distilled water through their lifetimes, maybe a cupful or two. Distilled water is expensive to make and therefore expensive to drink, and we don't need it anyway. Some of the minerals which are essential to health are in tap water so drinking only distilled water would not only be expensive, it would not be healthy.

Distilled water is water that has been turned to steam and recondensed. This removes the minerals and other impurities. Distilled water can be used for drinking. Many people don't because it tastes "flat".

Distilled water is the purest form of water. It will not "dilute" your body salt, and any grocery store carries it.
