Well the conversion scientifically is the same:
There's about 3500 calories in a pound of body fat.
The numbers are the same, but we all have different anabolic and catabolic reactions and body chemistry. Person A and B may have to work at drastically different amounts to meet the same goal because of that.
This next line isn't a cop-out, but just a general statement: Most people gain weight gradually over a period. You only need the equivalent of an extra apple a day added to your diet to gain a substantial amount of weight over time. Combine that with the bodies natural degression of metabolic rate, and weight gain is liable to happen. It can be something small like an extra tablespoon of salad dressing that overtime can cause a rise in weight.
People that have dieted in the past that have yo-yoed up and down the scale are in poor shape as well. Their metabolism is greatly weakened, which with just a few extra calories can lead to weight gain. Dieting is about a complete change in lifestyle: That can be good or bad depending on any number of people.
As for the activity level side:
To burn off a can of soda, the average person has to run at least 2 miles.
To burn off a two oreos, the average person has to do about 30-50 jumping jacks.
One of the newer explanations as to why we are so heavy is that we don't have good sleeping patterns. Sleep burns a lot of calories (Between 400-1000 calories). Not everyone can get the normal 8-10 hours that is recommended due to their lifestyle, or if they are like me: They have a really bad sleep-wake cycle. I can sleep 8-10 hours, but I rarely go into REM, which is the usually more restorative and calorie burning sleep zone.
There's no one explanation that can prove or disprove why it's hard to lose weight/easy to gain weight since we are all different, and because the reasoning behind what people weigh can vary greatly depending on the person in question.
The only way I can answer your question without agreeing with what I said above is this: In order to lose weight, one must change more than just one facet of life. Weight gain, however, can happen from so many different facets of life that go beyond activity level and intake.

Our bodies aren't made to lose weight, they're made to store weight. Look at bears and squirrels. They eat alot before they hibernate because they need the weight to keep them alive. The only reason they lose the weight is because they're not eating. Eating = weight. It's a fact of life. We just weren't made to be skinny. Hope that helps!

You might have a under active thyroid! This makes you gain weight, but its dam hard to loose it! If your feeling tired, your hair has gone like straw and falling out you might have one. Go see your doc for a blood test! Or you might have a slow metabolism!

people are just different, in terms of their size, height, weight and metabolism. For me, its so easy to lose weight and extremely hard to put it on, so every1 is different. however, to lose weight, you must burn more calories, than your calorie intake. exercising regularly definiately helps, and will burn more calories and therefore help to lose weight, and also eating healthily by eating more fruit and veg will reduce your calorie intake, so it becomes easier to lose weight.
