I just adopted a stray cat not a full twelve hours ago, she was found on the side of the road near the remaining half of her mother. I am taking her to the vet but have heard horror stories about the diseases she may carry, and now, the corner of one of my eyes is kind of numb and tingly. Anyone know if it may be related to my new found friend? I already had a doctors appointment set for wendsday for other reasons...should I mention the cat?

Thank you all already for the good answers! I wasnt even thinking of the pollen (waking up at 3am with nothing but an itchy eye and horror stories about ticks and ringworm can make you forget things) But I was already showing signs of a reaction to something latley...probably the field they just put into hay barrels outside my house. I did give her a bath but it was after a bit of cuddling (and she was so well behaved!)
I'm taking some benadryl and we'll see where it goes from here =)

Sure mention the cat. My Dr. told me that cats can bring pollen in the house on their fur causing a concentration you may not otherwise get. I had itchy sticky eyes. So now if they have been out,(I only have one that goes out) I will wipe her down real quick with a towel to take off pollen that might be on her fur. No itchy sticky eyes and no more allergy medicine for me. That did it. It is pollen season. I hope that's all it is. People will scare you with the worst case scenario. Good luck.

Don't count on that with the animal control--- our shelter is 'no kill' either, but they do NOT accept pets being dropped off anymore. ALL animals have to go to our animal control and they're held there for 5 days only. During that time, if something opens up at the shelter and they can take another cat or dog, they go to animal control and choose one that was turned in by an owner, or one of the 'strays' who are on their last day. If they take them, then yes, the animal will be at the shelter till they're adopted. But the reality for all the other animals at the animal control unit is---they only get 5 days. After that they're euthenized. So while the animal shelter seems like the good guy, they aren't really, they no longer take the animals people want to drop off, so the majority of animals turned in here in our city are euthenized. Same at your end I wager. Your animal control only has so many cages and kennels. Ask them how long they hold the animals there. Some cities are only 3 days. Some hold for 7. But they all euthenize after that.

You could be allergic to your new friend, some allergy medications will help with the eye problems. You should also wash your hands after every petting session. It could also be pollen on the fur which is what I am allergic to, and everytime I pet my cat it goes into the air and my eyes almost immediately itch and tingle. Giving the cat a bath may help, if not their are many medications such as claritin and other over the counter drugs.

Don't worry, the diseases the cat may have usually don't affect humans. Of course you need to have hygiene measures and wash your hands after you touch the kitten, before putting your hands in your mouth or rub your eyes. The problem in your eye may have been due to something you already had, but it is not impossible that it was slightly irritated by your rubbing your eye after touching the kitten, especially since the kitten may have been dirty from the streets, but in this case it is nothing serious. It's happened to me a million times. If it's not gone in a few hours, get Tobrex eye drops from your local pharmacy, use it for 3-4 days, and stop worrying! Well done for saving the kitten. Click on my name, go to my answers and find the answer I gave just before this one, I have many instructions there for new kitty owners!

My advice is to ask the vet for anything you have that you suspect may have sth. to do with teh kitten. They know better about cat transmittable diseases than human doctors, who just fnd it easy to blame the cats for anything. Like toxoplasma, which is a bacterial infection that cats may carry, but it is 99% of the time transmitted to humans by eating uncooked meat of other animals, and yet cats are blamed 99% of the time by human doctors! You'd have to eat kitty poo to get it though!

Hey, I read your question and I've recently learned that my cat carried pollen back into my condo from his fur-just from chillen on the balcony! I've concluded my theory about why I was experiencing itchy, dry, and irritated eyes. I was beginning to think I was allergic to my cat of 5 years, but an air purifier and a cleaner cat did the trick.

Maybe your having an allergice reaction to the cat or something. If you touched the cat and rubbed your eyes, it might have irritated it. Tell the doctor about the cat. This will help the doctor be able to care for you better. Good luck with your eye & your new friend. =)

How sad for the kitten... Give her a bath... she may simply be covered in dirt and exhaust fumes that are irritating your eyes. Their little tongues can only cope with so much dirt!
