Well, I don't know what's going on with the Chinese community there in Mandarin-dominated Chinese American society. I still hope that most Chinese in San Francisco still speak Cantonese there so I'm able to migrate easily without breaking a sweat since I don't speak Mandarin (although I understand it a little) and my Cantonese is quite fluent (although it's a little broken). So please tell me the truth, Chinese in San Francisco.

San Francisco is a very Cantonese dominated area. There are people who speak Mandarin, but most are Cantonese. Actually, over 90% of the Chinese is Cantonese (and variations of it like Taishanese.) All the stores in Chinatown are owned by Cantonese, and the workers are Cantonese. So if you plan on buying roast pork or something, you would definitely speak in Cantonese. (Which is ironic since most of China is Mandarin, and Mandarin is the official dialect of China.)

Here's some history if you'd like. During the Gold Rush in California, most of the Chinese people that came to California were from the Guangdong province of China. (That's where Hong Kong and Guangzhou is.) Guangdong is the home of Guangdong Hua = Cantonese. Chinatown was even made by those people. That's why SF is mostly Cantonese. (Guangdong is mandarin pinyin.)

The rest of California is much more balanced when it comes to the numbers of Cantonese and Mandarin. (Even Japanese and Korean.)

When I went there, most people spoke Mandarin, but there are still plenty of people who speak Cantonese. If you can't speak Mandarin well, just talk in English!
