I have done both and more. It is really up to your likings to pick the one thats best for you.
kick boxing is a combo of boxing and karate anyways so by taking Kb you are learning basics of Karate too. MOST Kick boxers I knew when I was one years ago were all black belts and up in one form of Martial arts.
You may wanna consider both!! kickboxing is great for cardiovascular training and for more real life contact but you do have gear on of course.
Karate will teach you the mechanic of how to throw the kicks and punches and other techniqes and better prepare you to be a kickboxer I highly suggest to be a kickboxer you have some form of Martial Arts training to implement it.
good luck.

I have done both and originally started in Judo and then did Karate before doing kick-boxing and fighting first as an amateur and then later as a pro and I have to say it depends on the person and their reason for taking martial arts. Karate and Judo made me much stronger mentally and gave me better skills, especially in kicking, that prepared me better for kick-boxing and training to be a fighter. I have also seen kick boxers go to boxing gyms to better work and develop the use of their hands and develop their boxing skills. On the other hand when first starting out in karate your workouts may not be as vigorous as those in a kick-boxing gym or program. The emphasis in those programs is on learning and technique not "working out" per say. So if your reasons are for getting into shape faster and weight loss I would go with kick-boxing-especially if you are a teenager or a younger adult. If you older then I would opt for a good karate program where you will learn and develop your martial arts skills and knowledge to a much finer edge while getting in shape gradually and things are usually much more closely monitored. For self-defense I would definitely do karate. While kickboxing will give you good stand-up skill often times if altercations aren't ended quickly they end up on the ground and then other skills and knowledge come into play that often times kick-boxing programs don't offer.

i loved Karate (Kenpo to be exact) when i was a kid. It taught me alot about respect, kept me out of trouble, and was really the first activity i truly focused on other than baseball.I think Karate is great for those that aren't into the full contact fighting and want to get involved with a martial arts. If you really get into it you will learn about fascinating cultures, history and beliefs. It can be mentally rewarding as well as physically.
now that i'm older i prefer Kickboxing (Muay Thai) over practically every other martial arts out there (BJJ comes in close second). Its a thrill for me to compete in a full contact muay thai fight, its a great workout, and is highly practical for a self defense situation. Muay Thai however can be rough. The more involved you get with it the more physically demanding it is. But the rewards are worth it.

I've done both, and truly enjoyed them.
I did karate but I moved out, and couldn't find my style at my new place, so I looked for alternates, so I tried kickboxing and muay thai.
The karate (ryobu-kai) I did had practical Kumite, as we would sparr full contact with 6oz gloves, bruises were not uncommon, and we cross-trained with other guest sensei.
Muay thai and kickboxing also are realistic and practical, and added weapons to my arsenal (more elbows, knees, and the muay thai roundhouse kick for instance)
I liked both equally, but things happen for a reason, It's always good to stick to one thing in order to master it, but learning other styles will broaden your arsenal, and make you a more versatile martial artist, or fighter.
I hope this helps
good luck!

Kickboxing, boxing, wrestling or judo is more realistic
I have never been able to catch or block somebodies hand in mid air and a lot of those karate moves are like that

Karate definitely works in street fights. With karate your 10 steps ahead of them, you know how to attack them successfully. Also with Karate if you learn it properly from a good instructor you will be pretty fast is well. Plus when they try to fight back you can block them and drop them(make them fall over). Also if you have ever watched a Martial arts film with Jakie Chang or Bruce lee, you spot them doing moves from Karate that you know. When i see them doing moves that i can do, i feel good.

kickboxing is for girls muay thai is for men.muay thai is better if you want to get fit and ring fight karate is more practicle on the street and in other self defence situations.i would suggest do freestyle karate as a base and crosstrain in muay thai and 3 or 4 years down the track do a ground/grappling style.
