He should take anti-biotics, drink lots of crnberry juice and water, stay away from coffee and coke products, citrus juices, and other caffeine and acidic drinks. He can take Uristat Original if urination is painful. He should take anti-biotics because he can damage his kidneys unless he is cured. He can alleviate the symptoms with the above methods, but will still harbor the infection and damage his kidneys.

Hi,
You boy friend can be treated.
The urinary tract consists of various parts that produce, store and get rid of urine. It comprises of the two kidneys, the two ureters, the bladder and the urethra. When blood passes through the kidneys, the waste products from the blood are removed, making up the urine which flows through the ureters into the urinary bladder and then pushed out through the urethra.
The urinary tract can be infected by bacteria in two ways:
By bacteria entering the kidneys from the blood and travelling down.
By bacteria entering the urethra and travelling upward.
UTIs are caused by bacteria getting into the bladder from the kidneys. The following predispose to UTIs:
In small children, the use of diapers is a very common contributing factor. If the child passes stool that is not cleaned for a long time, the stool that contains bacteria can be a source of infection. This is particularly true in small girls as compared to boys as their urethra is shorter and can be infected easily.
In older children improper cleaning can also be a cause. Wiping back to front pulls stool into the vaginal area from where it can travel up.
Long intervals between urination can be another cause as this weakens the bladder muscles. Some urine is left in the bladder that can be a source of infections.
In women who are sexually active bacteria may be transferred from the anal and vaginal area to the urethra and then the bladder.
If water intake is low, urination will be less and bacteria that might have entered the bladder will have more time to multiply and grow leading to infections.
Frequent urination with only small amounts of urine.
Burning or pain when urinating.
Urine that smells bad or is cloudy or at times contains blood.
Diarrhoea and vomiting.
Lower back pain.
Fever with chills and shivering.
How is the problem diagnosed and treated?
A sample of the urine is taken and analysed for the number of bacteria and white blood cells in it. A fresh sample of urine is taken. Usually the urine is collected in mid-stream and the container must not touch the genital organs. The sample is analysed soon after collection.
A UTI infection is usually treated by the use of antibiotics such as nitrofurantoin, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole and certain penicillins such as amoxicillin. The urine culture can be repeated after 3-5 days to make sure that the antibiotic is working. The medicines should not be stopped till the infection is cleared completely.
It can be prevented
The most important method of preventing such infections is to practice good personal hygiene. Always wipe from front to back after a bowel movement or urination and keep the skin around the anal region clean.
Drinking plenty of fluids each day also helps in flushing the bacteria out of the urinary system.
Empty the bladder as soon as the urge to urinate occurs.
Taking of foods rich in Vitamin C such as amla, citrus fruits and juices helps to reduce the number of bacteria that might be harmful to the urinary tract.
If an infection progresses it may lead to pyelonephritis or kidney infection resulting in scarring and damage to the kidney tissues and subsequent renal failure.

A mild case of cystitis may resolve on its own without treatment. Because of the risk of the infection spreading to the kidneys, however, antibiotics are usually recommended. It is important that you finish the entire course of prescribed antibiotics.
Commonly used antibiotics include:
* Nitrofurantoin
* Cephalosporins
* Sulfa drugs (sulfonamides)
* Amoxicillin
* Trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole
* Doxycycline (should not be used under age 8)
* Quinolones (should not be used in children)
Urinalysis and Urine culture may also be done to find out whether it is bacterial or fungal infection. Laboratory analysis of the urine (urinalysis), sometimes followed by a urine culture, can reveal whether you have an infection. Although no simple test can differentiate between an upper and lower urinary tract infection, the presence of fever and flank pain indicate that the infection likely involves your kidneys.
Consult an Urologist.
Please see the web pages for more details on Urinary tract infection.

He'll need a prescription from a doctor for antibiotics. There is some evidence that cranberry juice can help with urinary tract infections. He should also drink lots of water to flush his kidneys & urinary tract.

He needs antibiotics. He can also drink cranberry juice- ther real stuff not the cocktail because cranberry helps to clear up infections in the u.t. There are also cranberry pills that you can buy at the health food store. A pill called Uristat can be taken to aleve the symptoms- frequency of needing to go & pain. It doesn't heal it, it will just help him feel better whilst it is healing.

You will probably need to see the doctor and get a prescription for Cirpo or Levaquin.
It will help to have him drink plenty of fluids and include in that cranberry juice to help make his urine more acidic.
