No it is real and it is happening right now. If you think back to this winter that we had some places had a mild winter and it was warmer. Why are the polar bears becoming extinct?..because of the melting of the polar ice caps which is caused by the extensive use of fossil fuels and other gases being emitted into the atmosphere causeing the ozone layer to become thin and allow more sunlight to come in. Some may say that the earth is getting hot due to the natural cycles of the earth and the earth also gets cool thus causing ice ages. That is true but to the extent of the fact that we have the most amount of people living on the earth that we have ever had, which we need more energy to supply our needs. Which means more emitting of co2 and other gases that cause the temp to rise. Before when the earth went through natural cycles there was barely any humans on earth and fossil fuels were not yet discovered and abused. If global warming was not happening then hurrican katrina would not have been as strong as it was granted it was a category 3 hurricane but it was the tail end of being a category 4 as it was hitting the coast, the fact of the matter is that as the earth temp rises so does the sea temp. As the sea temp rises the storms that form on the sea become stronger and faster and when they hit land they will be more devastating than Katrina. It is said that if both the polar caps melt and greenland melts that the sea level will rise by 10- 30mm which will cover most of florida, all of new orelans and anything that is below sea level. If this happens then more people will be struggling for land of there own which could cause people to fight and the world could be on a destructive path. Yes this all sounds like dooms day but this could very much happen if we do not take action to stop what we have created. By finding alternative sources of energy, ask the government to push the automobile company to make more efficent cars, and to look for alternative fuel sources. You can make a difference by buying lightbulbs that do not use much energy, turn off electronics when not in use and un plug them, buy products that are known to use less energy. Most importantly Educate yourself about Global Warming if you do not know the facts then you will assume wrong things and when you assume you make an *** out of u and me.

Let me recommend a better question for you, and that is how much of a contribution does human activity make to Global Warming?
We are in a period of Global Warming. We are very fortunate that we are in a period of Global Warming, otherwise most of the north American continent, including much of the northern United States would be under a sheet of ice over one mile thick.
Essentially most of the northern United States would be uninhabitalble.
However that Global Warming was due to natural processes.
If you will try to answer the question how much Global Warming is due to human activity and how much is due to natural processes which have nothing to do with human activity, based on the peer reciewed scientific literature you will find the results both frustrating and fascinating at the same time.

This is science and what counts is the data.
"I wasn’t convinced by a person or any interest group—it was the data that got me. I was utterly convinced of this connection between the burning of fossil fuels and climate change. And I was convinced that if we didn’t do something about this, we would be in deep trouble.”
Vice Admiral Richard H. Truly, USN (Ret.)
Former NASA Administrator, Shuttle Astronaut and the first Commander of the Naval Space Command
Here are two summaries of the mountain of peer reviewed data that convinced Admiral Truly and the vast majority of the scientific community, short and long.

It's (mostly) not the sun:

Science is quite good about exposing bad science or hoaxes:

There's a lot less controversy about this is the real world than there is on Yahoo answers:

And vastly less controversy in the scientific community than you might guess from the few skeptics talked about here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scientific_opinion_on_climate_change
http://www.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/full/306/5702/1686 and:
"There's a better scientific consensus on this [climate change] than on any issue I know - except maybe Newton's second law of dynamics. Global warming is almost a no-brainer at this point,You really can't find intelligent, quantitative arguments to make it go away."
Dr. Jerry Mahlman, NOAA

When the earth is not cooling globaly, it must be warming globaly. The temperature of something, does not tell the measured heat of something, and there is no such thing as cold as we know, merely the absense of heat. The total motionless of matter may be cold, but that has not happened yet.

Not any more by now even the skeptic admit that it exists
As to why it exist and how serious it is whose fault it is and if we can do anything about it ,
That they will be fighting about until they go up in flames.
