Many people thought he was the messiah until Jesus started his ministry even though John kept telling people he was just preparing the way for another. Some people continued to believe John was the messiah after Jesus. Jesus deferred to him during his baptism and I am sure he had a profound influence on Jesus while he was growing up (they were cousins, John being the eldest).

All of this is, of course, based on information in the bible and in the early Christian traditions/teachings. Historical accuracy is murky at best.

The Christian Bible is full of information that would state this to be utter non-sense. John the Baptist himself claims that he is not the Messiah, but rather the one coming before to prepare the way for the Messiah. Jewish prophecies all indicate that there will be one who comes before the Messiah. John claims to be that person.

I suggest reading The Case For Christ for more information regarding this topic and others like it.

EDIT:
To answer your further questions/statments...Henry Lincoln has co-written several books that make such claims. His book, "The Templar Revelation" states that Jesus was really a follower of John the baptist.

You can also check out The Hiram Key (link below). Most people who make these claims are also making claims about freemasonory, Jesus marrying Mary, etc. So you'll find many of those books have claims to the point of John being the Messiah. The Hiram Key apparently has a nice Bibliography in it which would probably give you more information to check out.

Why believe in the name of John the Baptist if the source is the Bible and you do not believe the Bible? Let's consider the prophets of God that prophesied the Messiah...Did John fufill these prophesies? No...of course again this is Biblical and the Bible tells us Jesus is the Messiah. the Messiah was propesied by Isaiah...Was John born of a virgin in the house of David? Did John the Baptist atone for sin?

no it says he came in the spirit of Elijah-who was the one to predict the coming of Jesus the Messiah-which is what John the Baptist did-He also declared I am not the Messiah, I am not worthy but when he comes he will be worthy, and later he baptised Jesus and the Holy Spirit descended onto Jesus and from heaven came the words "This is my beloved son in whom i am well pleased.
John 17 talks about Jesus being glorified transfigured while yet on earth and the Elijah of old appeared with Moses to attest that Jesus was the Messiah.

this is how I came to know the true Messiah as a Jew too=according to Jesus the Word of God made flesh (John 1:1&14) "Faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the Word of God." Romans 11:17
If ones faith is in anything else they are trusting in error and will fail
this is what brought me as a Jew to the true faith in Jesus my savior best friend and joy and inner peace of my life and heavens promise too!=may I suggest true love that never ends and gets better every day-worked for me to come to true faith &=Love is the salutation of the angel to the stars.
For God so loved the world, He gave His only begotten son, that whoever believes in him wont go to hell tormented forever perised from God, but have the more abundant and everlasting life. John 3 & 10 and dont forget
Revelation 3:19&20 Jesus saith "I love you and ask you to repent from your sins (even one lie) and ask me in to be your friend."

how I got this true love that lasts-I prayed "Jesus thank you that you love me unconditionally, I am sorry for my sins, come into my heart and help me, be my friend, amen."

Revelation is a key -and Romans 1 said when we are unthankful and chose to worship the created instead of the creator-we need a new beginning in our life.

praying for you to find the true faith too, in amazing grace that saved me. David

John himself claimed not to be the messiah. Read John 1.

19 Now this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?”
20 He confessed, and did not deny, but confessed, “I am not the Christ.”

That is very contradictory to Scripture....and the Holy Spirit. In fact, as John Himself even said, "I baptize you with water. But one more powerful than I will come, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.”

And as the apostle John writes of John the Baptist, "He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light."

The Bible disagrees: "And this is the record of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, Who art thou? And he confessed, and denied not; but confessed, I am not the Christ." (John 1:19-20)

I think John the baptist would roll in his grave over such a claim....wasn't it him who sated that he wasn't even worthy to untie Jesus sandals....who ever made that claim was on crack

John himself stated otherwise.

"And as John fulfilled his course, he said, Whom think ye that I am? I am not [he]. But, behold, there cometh one after me, whose shoes of [his] feet I am not worthy to loose."
Acts 13:25
