I think the basic styles will still be around, such as Colonials, bungalows, ranch, etc. They have been around for decades and more, some much longer. And some styles are going to see a surge of popularity based on living trends...any style that includes a porch, courtyard, or balcony is going to be more popular now with our tendency to want more outdoor living spaces.
As far as finishes and styles, including colors, these are largely trends and as such, I would expect them to change. They almost relieve each other, like loud replaces serene from time to time and vice versa. But there are some trends that reflect a much larger shift in society and these are more sure footed trends in the industry. Things like open floor plans and easy care finishes will be around a long time...because people are becoming more "real" and more lifestyle friendly about how the home is supposed to function, not just how it is supposed to look.
Regarding trends, they also reflect technology, including how cheap something is to produce and market, and how accessible things are to the "ordinary" consumer on an ordinary budget. When things become easier to make, they become more popular to use by regular folks and then we see it becoming trendy.
I think re: housing, a couple things will only get more popular, and that is smaller scale homes, and "green" choices. At the same time, we see that more than ever before, people will be looking at more and more creative ways to bring a touch of luxury to their homes, even if it is just a tiny thing...in the past a fancy piece of cabinetry would be expected to live in a fancy home. Now, it is acceptable that one high dollar piece stands out in an ordinary room, becoming a real focal point.
Every once in a while, an old style will come back as "retro". Right now, trends from the 50's and 70's are considered "retro".

Style is changing with the demand for energy conservation and homes are becoming more and more efficient. House styles will change but more slowly than before. Governments are now legislating in areas so they meet energy standards. The interior is still changing and the modern kitchen will have electric drawers and lighting throughout the cupboards. I work in cabinet supply industry and there is alot happening and people are experimenting with cabinet coverings , finishes that would not have been considered just five years ago let alone ten. The future is bright and trends come and go. Colour trends come every 18 to 20 years, they change the colour names to make them accepted but people dont want to live in the colours they grew up with. Mission brown is now called smooth chocolate and sounds much better to me.

builders will build what sells and the baisic ,two story ,bungalow ,ranch, type of home will never go away. As for actual construction ...new technologies are always making the construction process better, as for interior trends they evolve, but the open floor plan is here to stay, formal living and dining rooms are becoming less popular, the finishes always change and then return, an example is floors for a long time cherry floors wre the most popular , now there is a wildfire for hickory...with interior colors the sages kakhi and those shades of green had big popularity for 5 or 6 years ,now it is the shades of browns...so interior finishes are ever changing ,but even those have their old standbys that never go out of style......contractor

There are traditional styles that have been around for almost 100 years. The cottage bungalow, the 2 story house without a formal name which is now our Colonial, Craftsman from the 40's, Ranch from the 50's. Traditional Styles will be here for many decades to come because people like them.

Houses from the 20's are still around so why not. Some people just don't change. They like what they got. That is what variety is all about.
