should someone be forced into a marriage because their parents arranged it? Shouldn't everyone have the chance to find the one they want to marry because they want to...not because they have to?

Well, arranged marriages are not nesscarily bad, when the people who are to be married are open to the idea. Of course no one should have to marry if they don't want to but many times ones parents know they're children very well and can see things in people that the child may be naive to. In many arranged marriages the two people grow to love and respect one another and have a sucessful marriage. So many people spend there whole lives trying to find someone and are disappointed or wound up alone. Not unless your in love with someone else I would say give the arranged marriage a chance. Marriage is bumpy either way arranged or not.

In some cases, the girls learn to live with it, and it goes okay. However, not all of arranged marriages are between middle-aged men, and "fresh" girls, it's not always like that. They are often the same age, or the guy is a few years older, but, in most cases, they marry at an early age, from 18 onwards. And it is not always abusive and loveless, that is a stereotype, however I understand what you mean, how on earth can you marry someone you do not know? However, when they marry, it is like they are dating and getting to know each other, a bond grows, and they do fall in love, it is not always abusive, it just depends on the character of the individual. I am not 100% against, because i know a LOT of people who have had arranged marriages and are happy, some are misreable, I know, and it must be painful being in a culture which is against dating, but the only way to be with someone is to marry them.

Actually arranged marriages had a divorce rate of almost zero.

Most of the time, when arranged marriages occured in the past, the couple had the chance to meet and they both had to agree, they were not forced.

Often they were engaged for a year before they were married duing which time either one could call it off.

The marriage has about the same chance for success either way.
Arranged marriages have worked for centuries.

I know of many cases where it has been sucessful. it of course does not always ban out great. However it is a common practise in several cultures. Nobody should be foreced into anything. But not all arranged marriages are forced. many people trust their parents to guide them into a suitable marriage for them. After all don't we all seek our parents approval of our loved one's?

In most arranged marriages, as far as I know, the child has the final say.

The parents act more as a screening function, by deciding who your choices will be.

I'm sure that some parents abuse their power, but the parents are the mature ones who should have their child's best interests at heart.

You are confusing FORCED marriage with ARRANGED marriage...
FORCED is the one where they don't have any say in it... and their parents want them to get married...
ARRANGED is the one where the parents say how about this girl/boy... s/he has a good family... etc. etc.... they sit down and talk... date for a while... and if they want to... they get married...

FORCED should never be done... and there is nothing wrong with ARRANGED marriage bcz they have a say in it...

At leas that's what arranged marriage means in my country!

I think in some cases when the people are okay with it, it's fine. It's surprising how many people find love through arranged marriages, I know I was surprised.

People will dislike me for this but yes. In a Monarchy or in tribes (or similar governments) arranged marriages prevent wars by binding two ruling families together. Sometimes the responsibility of our lives should out weigh our desires.
