Yes, Corpsmen are medics. Since the Marine Corps has no medical personnel of it's own, the Navy provides this for us. Marine units, not just infantry, have Corpsman attached to them. Personally, I believe Corpsman are some of the bravest human beings on the planet. I have seen them run through hell to help a wounded Marine. They have total disregard for personal safety when a Marine is hurt. Corpsman are always called "Doc", until you get hit, then it's "CORPSMAN UP!!" God bless all the "Doc's" out there.

Corpsmen in the Navy fill a number of roles in the medical field within the Department of th Navy. The role they are most known for is working as field medics for the Marine Corps. They also work in Naval Hospitals, and onboard ships. Smaller ships which don't have a doctor have an Independent Duty Corpsman who receives medical training beyond what a Corpsman normally gets. During WWII several Navy Corpsmen serving aboard submarines successfully performed life saving surgery on their shipmates. Also during WWII there were several Corpsmen that were awareded the Medal of Honor.

I was a Corpsman. I joined to go with the Marines and not get stuck on some ship. HM's Hospital Corpsman are trained in all aspects of medical care when deployed with the Marines i shot xrays, did dental cleanings, gave shots, exams and many other things we are well rounded. You can go to a school to specialize in certain things like pharm, OR, xrays etc or u can be an 8404 field medic and put on them greens and serve with them motivated devil dogs u can also work in hospitals or ships. I worked with Army and AF medics too and the basic medic of the 3 i was more well rounded. Hope this helps. Semper Fi

Depending on what grade level he is he nothing more than a glorified nurse or nurses aid. the problem you have in the sevice is that people are put in positions in wich they are not really trained for but are learnig to train for that position. Many time though there is more responcibility put on them then they can handle and so they do it and every one just shuts thier mouth. and records get lost and no one will admitt to anything.
that's the service for you.

They are lifesavers. Having served as a Marine Infantryman, having them beside me, gave me a whole new appreciation for them. Yes, they are medics, but often are right there fighting alongside their Marines. To all the Docs out there, Thanks!!
