honestly - how can it not be painful?? the Dr. is going to cut off excess skin, skin attached to their bodies. it's not a fingernail, it has nerves and veins. both my sons were circumcised before we left the hospital, their father thought he would pass out, both times. neither of our sons remember it, thank God. how traumatic. be prepared for animosity from your sons. you are their protector and you have taken them to a place where they have been hurt and damaged. be prepared for future counseling when they are teens.

Whilst it would have been much better had the boys been circumcised shortly after birth - or at least in the first 6 months, they can be circumcised at any age and now is better than waiting any longer.
The doctor will give them an injection of local anaesthetic so that they feel nothing during the procedure. There will be some discomfort for a few days afterwards, but infant tylenol should be all that is required to cover it.
There are several different methods used for circumcision, but the Plastibell is the most likely for your boys. The top of the foreskin is slit and the entire penis thoroughly cleaned with an antiseptic solution. A small plastic bell is placed over the glans (penis head) the foreskin pulled back over it. A string is tied tightly over the foreskin and into a groove at the back of the bell so as to cut off the blood supply to the foreskin. Most of the excess foreskin is cut off with scissors to give a neater appearance at the is stage. No dressing is required. After about a week the foreskin remnant will die off and fall way, taking the bell with it. The circumcision is now complete.
Costs vary considerably from doctor to doctor but each should't be much more than a $100.

It cost my husband and I about $75 for each of our boys. They had it done when they were only a month old, it is painful, the doctor is supposed to use local anestetic, make sure he does, then puts a ring on the foreskin and cuts it off. The ring then stays on for a week or two and then falls off, you should check it daily for any infection. I personally wouldn't have waited as long, but you should get it done early as you can because you don't want them to remember it, I think it might be bit tramatizing.

The sooner the better. Maybe you can ask your doctor for an estimate of the cost. My nephew was 6 months when he was circumsized and he was just fine.

Here is, probably more information on circumcision than you ever wanted to know:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Circumcision
Please note: my mother, who was a bleeder, didn't have me circumcised as an infant, and left it to me to decide in later years if I wanted to have it done. When I was 23yo, I chose to go for it, as my foreskin would not pull back when arroused, such that it blocked my ability to enjoy the sensations during penetration. I am glad I did it. I am also very glad my mother let me be the one to decide, later in life, if I wanted it done or not.

Are you sure that you want to do this? They will be four years old and it will hurt. Have you discussed this with your pediatrician? It really is not medically necessary to be circumsized.
