I don't think reading the bible to children is brainwashing.

I think interpreting it for them, and telling them it is real, is brainwashing.

Isn't giving them a history book, written by white men, also brainwashing? What about a science book that presents Darwin as a genius with the perfect theory (even though he admitted it was wrong, himself)?

Young kids have a very elastic sense of reality. Reading the Bible or The Very Hungry Caterpillar doesn't have much influence on their thoughts or beliefs. It's only when kids have matured and virtually finished their cognitive development (the end of Piaget's formal operations stage) that they can begin to rationally evaluate the types of concepts in the Bible (or any other texts, for that matter). That's why most churches don't baptize children - they aren't mature enough to be held accountable for their faith, or lack of it.

You are right or else here is the biggest coincidence; most children of Christians are Christians, most children of Muslims are Muslims etc. Although there is no such thing as brain washing. If there was, then people would wash their brain and make it cleaner.

But what you are taling about is making it so someone cannot think for themselves but just follow a teaching. Actually it is not from reading a book like the bible to them but telling them to close their mind to everything else except the bible and Jesus.

Yes, if you preach that it is the exact truth and any one who says it's no is lying.

We read the bible with our son, along with all other mythologies. We make no judgements. He can tell a good story when he hears one. Greek mythology makes more sense than Christian mythology.

And we read all kinds of history and science books because that is where truth can be found, not some bible that cannot even be verified as truth. SCIENCE shows us the truth.

Wouldn't giving them a science book or history book be brainwashing as well? It works both ways. And it's not really brain washing. Lots of kids have grown up in religious or faith filled homes only to leave that religion behind when they move out.

So, why wouldn't reading them science and history be brainwashing also? You obtain knowledge, be it Bible or science. Based on that collection of knowledge, you, as an adult, will be able to make choices, form opinions, and converse in a language other than "duh." You should have know this already without asking such bias question.

When you tell a child Santa exists they believe you.

When you tell a child about the tooth fairy, they believe you.

When you tell a child about gods, ghosts, witches, goblins, ghouls, etc... they believe you.

You are the closest thing to an all knowing being they have and in their innocence THEY BELIEVE YOU!

The difference between all the things I listed and a god is that gods come with a book (pick your religion) that insists it is real so they NEVER outgrow the belief unless they actively question it.
