Dreams help you sort things out and deal with them, you could be dealing with something from the past.
Once I dreamed I had a ear infection so I watched to see for the next few day and sure enough I had this infection. Our bodies knows things and tells us sometimes even in our sleep and I believe that it can happen in our dreams too whether it is about the past or present.

Most dreams actually are representations of people, places, and things that have already occurred. Few dreams relate to future events, mostly because the direction of the future can be changed moment to moment, and thus cannot be prepared for.
Also, dreams are magnets for what is the strongest emotion within us that we need to deal with. Thus, if you still have issues with something that happened years ago, why wouldn't your mind be using those images and associations to convey or connect the difference between who you are now and who you were? Are you different, in what way are you different, are you different in some ways but not others, and are you moving in a different direction? All such questions are equally valid fodder for dreams.
