My friend is having a wedding and said that she thought it was called a money purse... I have never heard of it and thought someone on here might have.

It is called a wedding card box or a wishing well or a bird cage. It can be any shape and size container that will accomodate regular hallmark size cards. Sometimes they are shaped like wishing wells in white with floral decorations or wire birdcages, mail boxes or treasure chests.

I'm creating my own treasure chest for the card box at my beach themed wedding. We have a wooden pirate's chest that I'm going to dress up with faux jewels, pearls and chocolate coins. It will have a slit cut in the top where the cards go in. I'm going to give away little tulle bags of chocolate coins, to go with the card box.

Side note: Please make sure someone puts away the card box half way through your reception. Normally this is the Matron/Maid of Honor's job. The box will be full of cards that have money/checks in them. Many a bride and groom have found their cardbox has dissapeared before the end of their wedding. Thieves can keep track of wedding schedules for churches, and will come in and remove the card box and just leave. I have friends that had this happen to them.

There are various choices a couple can have at a wedding for people to drop off their gift envelopes. Some choices are:
a birdcage, a treasure chest, a square box, etc. If you not want a place where people drop off the envelope, then you could choose to use the money bag or gift bag. You would then have to walk around carrying it, so that when people hand you their envelope, you would put it into the bag. This is actually a pain, because you'll either have to carry it, or have someone hold onto it and watch it for you all night. You're better off with an item where people drop off the envelope.
Just make sure that it is placed somewhere so that it is always visible. This way neither the guests or the working staff can attempt to remove any envelopes without being seen.

In the South, the tradition is to call it a Wishing Well, but I have also seen these as mailboxes (see links below). Either way, it's a good idea to have a safe place for guests to stow their money-bearing cards away from prying fingers.

At my own wedding (an English garden theme), we used an antique bird cage for this purpose. The cage was painted to match the wedding theme, and I tied a large bow on top for good measure. We placed a few "prop" cards in the bottom so people would know what we were up to, and it looked lovely.

The card box is for the gift table to put cards in so they do not get lost

The money purse is a little white purse that the bride wears (if she chooses to have a money dance) so that people can put money in if for the dance with her. The money is used to help the Bride and groom start thier new life together.

Hope this helps

I've never heard it called anything but a card box. It's on the same table that is used to hold wedding gifts, and the cards are put inside the box so that none of them are knocked off the table or forgotten during clean up.

People don't just use a box. They make something very nice like a wishing well or a pretty flower planter. At one wedding, there was a design in the shape of the bride's shoe where people could leave cards and cash gifts.

Card box. It's a little bit more politically correct. Money Purse, just makes it sound like you just want people dropping the checks and cash in with no card.

I've heard of a money purse, but I've also heard it called a card box. In any event, have someone keep their eyes on it. These have been stolen by theives.

I'm pretty sure it's just called a money box.
Lately I've been seeing people use a white mailbox as the money holder with a slot on top. I've seen them decorated in various ways.

It's a card box. But I've seen something called a money tree that I thought was better.
