It kinda goes back to where God created man in the Bible. He created us in his own image for a reason. Not only that, but Christ told us in the New Testament to be perfect even as our Father in Heaven is perfect. If God is truly Our Father and we are His children, then don't we have to potential to become like him? Don't you think that He might have prepared a way to progress and be like Him? I would like to say that i know that He did and is is possible to progress to that level. Yeah, i know a lot of people out there don't believe the same as i do, but know there are people out there that do. I'm not giving some whacked out answer to be sarcastic. This is what i believe and i feel that everyone is entitled to their own belief in this matter, but I'm telling you, yes.

Where are you coming from?? Our soul only is our mind will and emotions. It is kind of like the illustration of body, mind and spirit in church yesterday. THe Spirit guides the mind to tell what the body is to do. Our soul can be saved or not depending on our choice. I do not think we have the ability to merge with God? We can commune with God but not merge with Him. Hope that helps.

Though we have the ability to merge with God also known as Krishna, Allah, Jehovah, Vishnu, etc.) that is not the ultimate goal, nor is it desirable for the devotee of the Lord to do so. We are eternal spirit souls, part and parcel of the Supreme Soul, Named above. We have all the qualities of God, but we never become God. Just as a drop of water from the ocean, has all of the qualities of the ocean, but it never becomes the great ocean. Though we are separated parts and parcels of Krishna, God (Krishna) is always full within Himself, meaning He doesn't need us to be full and complete. We become Godly souls when we are self realized, but never become God. We can become little so-called gods, who control the material nature, under the supervision of The Supreme God Krishna (Vishnu) But that is also not the supreme Goal. The Ultimate goal of the soul, is to become the loving servant of God and if He desires for us then return to the eternal Supreme Abode. Merging is not pleasing to Him, being it is a temporary situation. The souls constitutional position is to serve God consciously and there is no service merging into the Brahman effulgence of the Lord. For info go to harekrishnatemple.com Read Bhagavad Gita As it is By BHaktivedanta Prabhupada- tells all.

The theory of ' Aham brahmasmi ' propagated by Adi Jagadguru Shri Shankaracharya can lead us to misunderstand the reality.
A soul is limited to live within the body only. God is present everywhere. We are under maya, the material bondages, where as He is the Lord of the maya.
We are vibbhinnansh, the power of God in an absolutely fractional form, like sun rays are to the sun.
Merging with God will make us lose our identity, and in that case how will it matter to us whether we are one with God or not, when we can never realise that, because our power of conceptualization also will merge with God.
So best thing is to understand ourselves as separate than God. That will keep us glued to the thinking of the divine.
Adi Jagadguru's perception is not for us to follow. It will be way ahead when we can understand what he actually meant by what he said.

I agree with Jayasri and Vijay D.I think Its better that the jeeva doesnt forget his true place. people do mistake "aham brahmasmi".God is independent, omnipotent etc ,a soul isnt-we have originated from God.There is difference b/w a self realised soul and the absolute spirit or Nirguna brahmn as in the line-"this man is a lion". He is a man though he posses the virtues of a lion but that doesnt make him a lion.
Similarly a soul has those powers within it as its an amsha of God.Man can attain that state where he gets liberated and discovers those qualities of bliss, detatchment, knowledge etc that God has but that doesnt mean that he becomes God. He is only a liberated soul.
Lord Krishna says-"those who worship me come and merge with me" When a jeeva identifies its true self ie God is everything and it is nothing except a part and prcel of God he attains liberation. But it doesnt mean that soul is potential God.
source- my budhdhi or intellect or viveka
I will definitely find out about this in details from my Guruji n confirm the truth. Thanks for reminding.
however this question is a much debated one but very crucial.
EDIT-HOWEVER I DONT THINK THAT MERGING OR LIBERATION IS TEMPORARY(AS JAYASRI SAYS). LIBERATION ISNT TEMPORARY ACCORDING TO WHAT LORD KRISHNA SAYS. WE MUST TAKE HIS WORDS LITERALLY I THINK AND NOT INTERPRET IT DIFFERENTLY.

Since God does not have 2 eyes, it is not our body that was created in God's image. It is the soul that is like God. Jesus was the son of God and had a body and God has no body. So Jesus was not God and yet He was God. Jesus did what you are talking about and was inspiring others to do the same.
In reality there is only the oneness and nothing else. See site below for more on how someone can do this and what it is like. People say you cannot be one with God and yet they know that God is the only reality and there is nothing else other than God.
So everything is one with God including you but you can feel like you have a separate identity even thought you do not. It is like have MPD (multiple personality disorder) where there is only one you but there appear to be multiple yous. There is only God and nothing else.

Yes and no but mostly no way. God is in us because He created us. Any artist will tell you that he/she put themselves in their creations. God does not have partners but He needs servants.
If we were God then there would be billions of gods and they would all be in competition and hence divided. One Creator,
One Plan, One Purpose. Good question, sorry I can't do better justice to the idea.

By definition, there can only be One God;
by whatever name we come to know God.
By that term, we mean the Creator of all that is.
We all come from God (because He created us).
We may all return to God (we don't cease to exist).
So in a sense, we may all be united with God.
Of course, we have the freedom to reject that.
Then we are separated from God for eternity.
But that will be our own choice, not God's.
