Everyone has a different 'boogeyman'. That is because everyone's life experience is different. So someone whose had a bad experience with clowns might dream of a mad circus car full of clowns chasing them while another, who has no problem with clowns but a problem with vampires, would dream of being chased by a horde of bloodthirsty vampires.

Like most boogeymen, the dominant factor in the dream is usually two things: a feeling that they cannot be defeated and thus a need to run away from them as much as possible, but always with the feeling that one can never get away from them.

Nightmares are mostly about a lack of options: the more you feel 'trapped' when you are awake, the more your dreams will show you movies of you being 'trapped'. It's hard to dream about bunnies and yellow sunshine fields if you spend alot of time worrying about some 'problem' that won't go away. The bunnies (the good happy thoughts) don't stand a chance when confronted by all those undead nasty scary thoughts that won't die (all the fears and such you have during the day.)

The best way to deal with nightmares is immediately after you wake up from them. Your first feeling will still be the helpless one, but if you stop a moment and 'imagine' the dream turning out differently (like the energizer bunny pulling a flamethrower out of its drum and roasting all the zombies into little piles of ash) it gives your mind the 'out' it is looking for. By imagining that you CAN defeat the dream, your mind is relieved of the pressure that you feel during it. That, hopefully, will allow you to dream of the things that you do want, and also, help you when you wake up, since you won't be so 'helpless' in your dreams anymore and thus won't be so tired and drained when you wake up.

It might take a few sessions of imagining the zombies being turned to dust before your mind starts to do it in the dream, but it does work. Good luck.

dreams can be reflections of subconcious fears and anxieties. i often have reaccuring nightmares of being stuck in another body or i'm in jail. it might be a reflection of the way i feel sometimes of having the feeling of being imprisoned or trapped.
