What I mean is... say I found a beautiful file of one of his paintings and wanted to have it printed out as a print at the local print shop. (instead of paying 125 bucks for a print at some poster site).

Is that legal?

Not only is that illegal, but copying damages the original. And, hopefully, people at the copy shop know better than to do that and would send you away.

You will find that images of the Renaissance master's works are under licence of the museums that own them. Therefore you would be in breech of copyright law I should imagine if you produce an unauthorised print.
