You need to take care of this before it happens. Anyone that knows me (including family and friends) knows I don't appreciate people just dropping by. Even my mother won't just drop by. I have told everyone to phone first. Even when it comes to my phone #. They call me first and ask if it's ok for them to give the # to so and so. If it's a sales person, charity person or those religious groups, tell them that you are not interested, to have a good day and close the door. Don't say it's not a good time, because they will be back.

You tell the truth. The two most common senarios are:

1. Friends or family come to the door at an awkward time,

2. A stranger or someone you don't care for comes to the door uninvited.

To friends and family, say that this is not a good time and set a time when they can come by or give you a call. The thing about friends is that they understand and give you the benefit of the doubt.

The second category must be told politely but frankly that they are not welcome.

You can NOT answer the door...

You can open the door and politely say you're not interested...

If they are family members, and you don't want to talk to them, make an excuse that you were just about to visit a friend who is waiting, and leave your house. Say that gee whiz, if they had called you beforehand, they could have made plans to get together at another time, but golly, you are already late for your appointment or whatever. You sure hope they will call first, etc. etc., then get in your car and go.

any one showing up at the door should call first and ask to stop buy. then you get to say yes or no ,but if someone shows up at the door and r unwanted don't answer the door. if you cant tell who it is, either tell the people u like to stop buy, the secret knock to get the door open, or put in a door peep . they r pretty easy too install and cost about 10 bucks.

First off, don't let them in. I assume you know these people. Tell them that they have caught you at an extremely inopportune time, and that you aren't able to discuss anything with them right now.

Be polite, but not TOO polite, and tell them that you wished they really would call before visiting you and that your life is quite complicated and busy at this point. If they don't like it, then they are the "unwanted guests" so let them go away and fume.

Kindly tell them that this is not a good time for visitors.. Maybe suggest to call next time to set up a good time?

Or don't answer the door :)

if it's some one selling something, i always say "this is not a good time". that could mean anything and everything and they usually say they're sorry and leave!!
if it's someone i know, but not family or close friend, i will open the door and just stand there, obviously not clearing the path for them to come in. then make an excuse. "i'd invite you in but we just started dinner.......the kid just threw up....we were trying to have s**.....".
not sure what i'd say if it were family or close friend. i guess if they are that close, you could tell them yuo're "not in the mood to entertain." or "i'll call you when i get a chance"

I will either avoid answering the door altogether or simply tell the "visitors" that I'm working and unable to speak to them at the moment...

Of course, this only works on people I don't know personally---salespeople, etc.

If you prefer to remain non-confrontational, then always keep your coat by the door and have it draped over your arm when you answer the door. If its someone you wish to see, tell them that you just got home. If its someone you do not wish to see, tell them that you are on your way out. (This may not work if you're still in your pajamas.)
