Great Danes, from the ones I have met, are big, lovable Oxes, who believe that they are lap dogs!
My best friend has one. He is such a sweet and loving dog, however, he is as strong as an ox! The worst thing is, he doesn't understand his size. He runs about 130 lbs and I am 102 lbs and he really likes to sit on my lap. (It really doesn't work well for me!) He will also run into me, because he is excited to see me, and if I don't brace myself, I will easily be knocked down.
Great Danes are wonderful dogs. Just make sure that you teach yours from the beginning who is the Alpha and you should be just fine. Good luck to you!

Great Danes are just like every other dog that needs to be raised in a loving, caring and owner dominated home. Any dog can have issues and it is usually the owner that is the cause. If you are a good owner and keep you dog socialized then you should not have any problems. I do not know about any state banning, but then I do not know everything. I had a Dane and have a family member that owns and breeds them. I loved my sweet, loving, gentle, well behaved Great Dane and she made me feel she loved me and my family and friends too. She was a wonderful pet and I give a lot of credit to crate training the first part of her life. I recommend crate training to any one who buys or adopts a puppy. Great Danes are excellent small home dogs that most people do not realize. One other nice quality Great Danes have. If you know what you are doing with raising a dog then you will have a wonderful life with your choice in a Great Dane. Hope you have fun raising your pup.

No way...great danes are great dogs and are not violent. I get an emails from the AKC and they featured the Great Dane this month. Here is what they wrote:
Meet the Great Dane June 7, 2007
The statuesque Great Dane stands about 28 to 34 inches, toe to top, and typically weighs in at 100 to 160 pounds. But don't let the substantial size intimidate you. Danes are known for their gentle, friendly dispositions, which inspired legendary cartoon characters Marmaduke and Scooby-Doo. Although Danes are rarely aggressive, if provoked, they will bark. This protective nature makes them excellent watchdogs. Danes need at least one, if not two, long walks each day to stretch their legs. Because of their large size and strength, start training early and make exercise a priority.

Great Danes are not violent dogs at all. Please do more research on owning, caring for and training this giant breed dog before you make the committment to own one. There are thousands of Danes in rescue because the owner thought it would be cool to have a giant dog and have no concept of what it takes to own such an animal. The reason I am suggesting this is because I believe that if you had researched the breed you would not need to ask this question. With that said, after you have done all of your homework, if you decide to choose a Great Dane, please consider adopting a Dane from a reputable rescue organization rather than buying from a breeder.

I have had over ten Danes in my life and have never had one that was aggresive. They are indeed the gentle giants. The only one I ever had a problem with was a rescue Dane and that was because she was protective over me to a fault. If she thought I was being threatened she would become aggresive toward the threat. I would show her who is boss in a kind and loving way and socialize her with other dogs and people from the start and you will have a really good and well behaved dog.

Great Danes from European lines tend to be a little more aggressive, but most North American lines are very docile - hence the nickname of "Gentle Giant". While some Danes can be aggressive, the majority are very sweet dogs. Just remember - Danes are like potato chips - you can't have just one!

Most great danes love everything and everyone! But there are a few that are aggressive towards other dogs and small animals. It all depends on how well you train and socalize them as pups. It is amazing to me that they would be banned from anything. They are the best dogs in the world!

They are not normally violent and if your pups is from a good breeder, you have no worry. I have however heard rumors of some puppy mills that are producing Danes who are downright crazy so naturally the area bans the whole breed (laywers write the laws and take the easy path)

If not raised correctly all dogs can be violent, all dogs should not be left alone with small children. Though all the great danes I have been in contact with have been some of the nicest ang gentlest-sp dogs I have seen. Just make sure you socialize them with children, other dogs, cats, strange things like strollers, bikes, skateboarders, and just try to take them everywhere you can. It will help alot with their temperment.
Good Luck

Well bred Danes are not aggressive dogs. Also to my knowledge they aren't banned from any place.
The problem with ANY dog breed is the number of irresponsible breeders out there that breed anything that comes along without regard to temperament, health, conformation and then the people that buy from these types of breeders...this is what gives purebred dogs of any breed an undeserved bad name. Then you add to all of this owners who don't bother to teach good manners to their dogs.
