As a cna, a health care provider for MANY years.....the home he is in should be taking care of his medical needs. If not, then he needs to be placed in a better home. They have a doctor that is supposed to make daily rounds...find out what doc sees him at the home and call him personally. Just tell him what you put here...my father needs a checkup and a pacemaker check..(which should be checked routinely anyway by the RN on duty or the Director of Nurses) The facility is also supposed to arrange for transportation as well. They usually set it up with the ambulance corp in the area of call a transport bus/van.
You need to call that facility first thing in the morning and insist on talking to either the Director of Nurses or who ever is in charge of the Social Services in the home....it is federal law that there be both on staff. Don't take no for an answer...tell them about your concerns. And if there's no satisfaction, call your local ombudsman. The number is posted in every nursing home across the country, (it's different every where depending on your location, you will have a local rep.) They take care of ALL concerns!!! You need to get your dad proper care, and if your sister won't help, shame on her....now...being you're his daughter, if you have Power of Attorney, you have access to his medical records at the home, you have the right to know who sees him and what meds he is on. Get that info...it is soooo important!!! And making that appointment will be easy once you talk to the D.O.N. He or she will be able to help you.
Good luck...God bless...
I love the elderly!!!!

what? Why isn't the nursing home taking care of his medical needs? Why do you have to drive so far away? Aren't there any hospitals closer than 200 miles? I really don't understand. If your dad really needed a pacemaker then the nursing home would arrange transport by ambulance to the nearest hospital. How do you know he needs a pacemaker? If it's just a normal checkup that he needs, nursing homes have doctors that come around when needed and perform routine check ups on their patients in the nursing home. Nursing homes are not just for babysitting, there are licensed nurses and staff that provides all necessary medical care. My suggestion is to talk to the nurses in charge and tell them you want them to set up an appointment with his doctor. They take care of the rest.

There are a few options: Call a medical transport company - ask the nursing home who they usually use. Also, home care companies often provide transport service as well.

if he is in a nursing home, they should provide transportation. call them to find out. call your dad's doc to make arrangements with them as well. your siter is a b*tch. sorry, but she is. you should try to get full power of attorney for his medical needs. your sis won't be any help anyway. good luck
