1. More organic matter usually makes soil darker in color.

3. A mixed soil texture would be best for most plants. Too small (like clay) makes soil too hard for roots to grow through and makes soil impervious to water. Too large (like sand or gravel) makes soil drain too quickly and not hold water.
4. Organic matter in the soil does several good things for plants: It holds water in the soil, keeping water available for plants. It loosens the soil, letting air and roots travel through the soil more freely. It decomposes in the soil and adds nutrients.

3) Varied sizes would, I built a berm with talc and it collapsed fast, I built another with clay, then one with sand, the third one was a mixture of all three, it lasted longest.
