I usually add the tip to my credit card charge, but should I give him the money directly, since he's not the one at the register?

Cash in hand is always the best for them. It should be 20% of your total bill. If they are very good to you and your hair and you want to keep them be generous. Do not exceed the amount your cut cost though. They will expect a similar tip from you each time you visit.

It's fine to put it on the credit card. He will get it.
If you want to make it clear you tipped him; after you pay go up and thank him, tell him you added the tip to the credit card. Say you wanted to make sure he knows, so he gets it.

If the owner of the shop is honest, the additional money added to the card for the tip should be passed onto your stylist.

I tip mine with cash. Then use my credit card to pay for the hair cut.

Its nicer to give the money directly because then we don't have to pay taxes on them...most salons are honest enough to give the stylist their tip...if I ever cought a receptionist stealing stylist tips I would fire them on the spot

Why tip a hairdresser? Why tip anyone who is doing the job s/he is paid to do? By all means give a tip if you think the service is exceptional and warrants it but tipping for tipping's sake is something that should be stamped out. You pay someone to cut or style your hair. If the price charged is inadequate it is up to the hairdresser to set prices accordingly not for you to pay above the price asked.
