I am sorry to say that baggage handlers are extremely rough with luggage, I have seen it firsthand. I saw one throw a guitar case in Atlanta. You need to loosen the strings up, and pack newspaper around the guitar to give it some extra padding. You can also put some silica gel in the case to help out with moisture. That is really all you can do. I have a Martin acoustic guitar and there is no way I would take it on a plane after what I saw! Good Luck!!

I second Matthew C's answer- If you want to bring a guitar on the trip, find a cheap garage-sale special that will, if nothing else, stay in tune. I travel frequently for work, and I have a $5 "Marlboro Gear" guitar in a soft gigbag I found at a garage sale for a travel guitar. I loosen the strings before I fly, I'm usually able to stash it in the overhead- I pack all my picks, strings, etc in my check-in bags so the TSA screeners don't get too crazy- I've been flying with it for about five years now with no problem. If it gets trashed, well, I have to hit a few garage sales when I get home....
PS- I'd call the airline first-

Definately put in a guitar case.
I also unwind the strings when I travel long-distances.
Think about it: It's like wearing really right shoelaces. Sometimes, you have to loosten those puppies! Your guitar is no different! Give it a rest, and losten those strings. They can always be re-tightened!

i might stay away from BA precise now as they seem having an undesirable lot of strikes; Lufthansa in coach is pretty grim, as is Iberia. i might pass with United in case you've adequate money the greater cost for financial equipment Plus; it delivers lots greater leg room that's relatively superb on an prolonged flight, and extremely actually worth the money. 2nd decision could be Air Canada as their inflight entertainment structures are extremely superb and their planes are in many cases pretty sparkling and gentle. USAir's huge Boeings are ok, no longer great, pay attention for his or her A330 as some seats have terrible leg room because of inflight entertainment equipment bins below, same with Continental and Delta.

I'd put it in the case, but also speak to someone at a packing store like fed-ex who packs and does this professionally. They could give you a better heads up.

Go to your favorite guitar store and ask them, they may be able to properly pack it for youm so it doesn't get damaged in transit.
