Do you NEED one, no. But if you fly a Mexico/US flight you do. You can't board the flight without a passport. You can cross the border by land or sea without a passport. But if you plan to go a certain distance into Mexico you need to pay for a Tourist visa. So, basically if you drive or walk just across the border like to Tijuana you don't need a passport. The rules change sometime next year, and then you need a passport for all international travel.

Enjoy your trip. I went to San Miguel de Allende in my youth. All it took then was a birth cert to prove you were a US citizen. Since 9/11 things are a bit more involved. I highly reccomend San Miguel. It has a nice art school and a good internet cafe. It is where many folks from the USA go to retire. Note, the center of town is at 7,500 feet altitude, so it gets hard to breath when going up hill. So, take it slow and easy, like the natives. And have a siesta for a couple hours during the worst of the mid-day heat.

In any case, it pays to take a passport, as it insures you can cash checks and traveller's checks at nearly any bank with one. The United States Government guarantees payment of any financial instrument (check, money order, etc) when a passport is used for ID. Then, if you pass bogus items, the US Gov't comes looking for you...

Example, when there, I cashed a personal check for $1000 USDollars worth of traveller's checks in a bank that had an entire wall papered in bogus American Express Traveller's Checks. But with a passport, it was "...no problemo, senior."

One of my students just came back from Mexico and I heard that they were changing this law to requiring a passport now. But, check with the USPS just in case. I am sending the link below. I applied in mid March and last I checked, it is still processing. It is supposed to take 10-12 weeks. or for an extra 250 dollars you can expediate the passport to only a 2 week requirement. Since I can't really afford that and I have already waited since mid March, I suppose it should be here any day, but I can't help to think that all those extra dollars are the reason middle class people like me are being pushed to the side.

You don't NEED one, but you will soon. And as for applying for them, some say they're taking up to 6 or 7 months now because everyone is applying now. I ordered mine in Feb. and just got it at the end of May. I know it's not a "best answer", but just thought you should know.
