ASL is a real language, as are all other sign languages.
Each sign language is different, and has it's own grammar and a definite vocabulary (it's not just random symbols).
There is no real international sign language. I got the impression, though, that deaf people are better at communicating with foreign deaf people, than hearing people are at communicating with foreign hearing people. I think it's because sign languages are founded in visual impressions, which we all share, and that foreign signs are therefore easier to understand than foreign words (please note: I'm not claiming that sign languages are easier to learn, or more simple than "audio languages").

It is an actual language. It is used by the deaf and others as a means of communicating, and as such it is a symbolic language.
Our writing system is simply "random symbols". The letters themselves have no meaning, nor do they correlate to any specific objects in nature.
Ancient Egyptian glyphs were not random, and had more correlation than does our alphabet.

Hearing people speak in different languages. Non-hearing people have developed a 'universal' sign language which means the same thing no matter where they go. They can either spell each letter (with their fingers/hands) or use certain hand movements for an entire word.

it would take approximately as long because it would to study any language. you may study very uncomplicated Spanish or German or in spite of with some training, after some months. yet community audio equipment will in all likelihood nonetheless be way previous your understanding, and local audio equipment use words and words you're no longer taught in school. ASL is very comparable. you may take as many training as you like, yet you will no longer attain any degree of fluency in case you do no longer attempt to fulfill deaf human beings and immerse your self in the Deaf community. because of fact the different poster stated, you will no longer gain community fluency, yet many many Deaf human beings do no longer the two. maximum deaf infants are born to listening to mothers and dads and are not getting actual exposure to the Deaf community till later in existence. in case you're acquainted with signing, you may tell people who've been signing in view that start from people who're fluent yet discovered sign later. it extremely is a getting to grasp technique and it relies upon on how nicely you study languages. in case you study languages directly, it will be greater handy for you than in case you do no longer. provide it a pair of years, a minimum of, to realize "fluency" (regardless of the undeniable fact that no longer community fluency).
