No. It has a reputation for lawlessness. I have no idea if the reputation is deserved.

No definitely not. It is no longer safe to visit Papua New Guinea and in fact the Australian and New Zealand government advise strongly against visiting this country at all.
Bali in Indonesia is still the holiday of choice for Australians, and Australia for New Zealanders.

As mentioned previously NZ and Aust. are not dominions at all but sovereign nations with a shared head of state, the Queen. However, it should be pointed out that, in the case of NZ, self-rule in the form of a parliament was granted in 1852 when NZ was still a colony, not yet even a dominion. The British learned their mistake of not allowing America self-rule in the 1770s and were careful to prevent a recurrence of the revolution in their antipodean territories. Australia became a Commonwealth in 1900 and various steps such as the Act of Westminster further divided Britain from its former colonies over the 20th Century. The final straw was when the UK joined the European Common Market in 1973 and ceased giving import preferences to NZ and Aust. cutting off the last ties of trade. Many other nations also bear the Union Jack in the upper left corner of their flag. Cook Islands, Fiji, even the state flag of Hawaii because they were all once British colonies.

A friend of mine has just returned from 2 years there. They lived behind 2 meter high wire netting fences with barbed wire along the top. He had no trouble, but he said the only places they went at night had the same kind of fences. There are worse places in the world, but as a holiday destination? Not a chance.

Good question. As already noted - most people from Aust and NZ go to PNG for NON-work reason, go there for the Kokoda Trail.
As a holiday destination, it is not a recommended place as most of us here think it is NOT a safe place for a holiday.

The only people I've known who travelled to PNG for holiday time went there to walk the Kokoda Trail or Track. People do this trek in rememberance of the soldiers who fought and died there in World War Two.
.
The 96 km Kokoda Trail passes through rugged mountainous country of rainforest, jungles of fern, orchids, birds and clean mountain streams which tumble into steep valleys. It was where one of the bloodiest campaigns of World War II was fought 61 years ago.
I've known many who have gone to work in PNG. These days, most are men and they don't take their families. It can be a very dangerous place to live particularly in the large towns.
