This is what your dream means: The Lord is showing you a period of darkness in the world which is coming. And the people you saw walking around in darkness are people are spiritually blind and lost. Next, the person you saw sitting on his bottom represents someone who has sat in regards to seeking God and lost his dilligence. The waves of water which you saw splashing people away represents the judgement of God which will toss, and turn, and disperse people who did not heed the Lord's warning. The beautiful garden you walked into represent's the pleasant place of peace and favor of God. Also, dwelling in the Presence of the Lord. The large tree represents alot of things, not only the tree of life, but righteousness, and the Word of God. The dark person you saw is the devil who comes to decieve you. The reason you turned ugly is because you listened to the devil and allowed him to get into your head. The Lord is warning you that when you come into the pleasant place God has for you, the devil will come and try to spoil it for you. In addition, you let fear get into your life, that's why the devil was able to chase you. If you are strong in the Lord, the devil can't chase you anywhere. The Lord told you, "Protect the tree of life". This is what He means, He means guard the anointing which is on your life, guard your heart from the traps and lusts of the world and treat the Word of God in you life as something precious above all things. I could get deep in this, but I want to keep it simple. Okay, God is just letting you know some things in advance. Take care, Patrick.

Because this is an old dream it will relate to that time in your life when you had it.
Trees are symbolic of people and this one represents you. Read the book of Daniel in the Bible. Here is a bit for you:
Dan 4:20 The tree you saw, which grew large and strong, with its top touching the sky, visible to the whole earth,
Dan 4:21 with beautiful leaves and abundant fruit, providing food for all, giving shelter to the wild animals, and having nesting places in its branches for the birds—
Dan 4:22 Your Majesty, you are that tree! You have become great and strong; your greatness has grown until it reaches the sky, and your dominion extends to distant parts of the earth.
At that time in your life you were very promiscuous. This was a warning that your lifestyle could lead to hurt and abuse if you did not protect youself and keep yourself sexually pure.

I think it is a neat and unusual dream meant only for you. It is fascinating symbolism to say the least. It was hard for me to get an impression of what your dream meant but here's my best guess.
You are on your own journey in life. That no one else can make for you and that only you must travel alone. People that try to follow other people's paths get lost and washed away. Instead they must find their own path in life. This journey includes both the path and each destination you come to.
The tree and fruit represent some truth or insight meant only for you. But some of this insight can be ugly. What I mean is if used for good it will benefit people. But if used for evil it will hurt people including yourself.
Protecting the tree of life is to be true to yourself. Use whatever good you have learned to benefit others. Don't let others abuse or twist or pervert your good deeds into something bad.
That's my best guess. I'd like to see other replies. But that is still a great dream.

What is the Tree of Life?
What does it represent to the person?
Does the tree respond to each person individually?
The dream is an obstacle/reward dream. The obstacles are there to ensure that you have the fortitude to reach the end. The paradise of flowers at the end is the reward, the holy grail at the end of the quest.
Like most 'quests', what you bring with you is usually what you find in the end. An ugly person who brings ugliness and hatred and whatnot with them finds spoiled fruit, because they themselves have been spoiled by such emotions and experience.
The Tree of Life, thus, is the tree of hopes and dreams and success. To reach it, one must maintain such aspects and ideas within oneself, and not be 'spoiled' by the experience of others. When one is spoiled by experience, the tree of life bears a bitter ugly fruit, and such is the caution and purpose of the dream.

it's a trick, the tree is really the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, the devil always appears as light, in this case making you believe it's the tree of life! The tree of life was taken away from mankind, by man's choice! The fruit is really esoteric, arcane, gnostic knowledge-all mean 'hidden/secret'! Don't be fooled! That's how the devil subtly operates!

Everyone wants to escape death and the tree of life was a promice of eternal life, maybe this is what we all want, the promice of everlasting life, is this what you want, to live forever??? Is is this a promice from God that he will protect you??? Only you will know. And God will protect you so many times, if it is not your time to die.

Just a quick analysis. Seems you are looking to others to find fulfillment - your own feelings of inadequacy lead you to become a crowd pleaser - and if you can't please others then you withdraw. You need to build your self-esteem on good things you think about yourself not what others think.
