Atheists choose to be tolerant...christians are told to be tolerant.

One is a choice, the other is an order. Some are just not too good at following orders.

Hem hem, many Christians are necessarily all that tolerant. It depends on which ones you are talking about. There are too many people here to reach generalizations like that (these are tolerant, these are not, that kind of thing). Maybe you just happen to be around a bunch of really intolerant non-Christians.

Peace.

Toleration is a misnomer - you can say I hate your guts but will tolerate you existing - Christians are not called to tolerate others - they are called to love others - a much higher calling then toleration!!!!

they do, my gosh stop generalizing, there are Christians that aren't tolerant at all!
I'm tolerant when religious people come knocking on my door, or handing out pamphlets when i just want to walk along the beach, or when you cant sleep and the only thing on is preaching or advertising.......... so stop generalizing it comes down to how each individual handles it, christian or not!

Because that is what is taught.Christian World Alliance is a Christ-centered, global denomination which does not tolerate hatred or violence in any form. We believe the love of Christ to be both the personally and then outwardly transforming power needed by all mankind. http://www.cwaworld.org/

People who are intolerant of a Christian person views are generally referred to as ' bigots.' They often excuse themselves with the assertion that they have a right to defend their convictions. The big difference between ' bigotry ' and ' conviction ' is that conviction is knowledge which one can explain without getting angry.
Bigotry often stems from prejudice, which according to Webster is, ' judgement without previous investigation.' That's why open-mindedness and the willingness to learn often removes bigotry.
Speaking of ' tolerance '; it is thus that God tolerates sin because He loves the sinner. He does not will evil but tolerates it in order that ultimate good may come to the person of the sinner because He loves him. In human judgement we often confuse what is really good and evil. And what often seems evil to us is in the eyes of God good. This is often true in times of sickness, loss, etc. We deem these circumstances as evil, whereas in reality the only evil is sin-a thought or action contrary to the will of God. It is because non-believers so often judge as evil those things that irk them, which is motivated by love of self, that it so often becomes difficult for them to be tolerant of Christians views. Thus they become intolerant because they love themselves and their opinions, which they call convictions, more than the basic fact of all human relationships which tell us that ALL human beings are children of the same Father and equal to one another; and that we must love them as ourselves; and in doing so we tolerate their opinions. And in all circumstances of life we are tolerant because God wills it or permits them to exist. In this way tolerance becomes easy and desirable because we love God above all things and our neighbour as ourselves.
Tolerance without humility and self-confidence is impractical. And true humility and self-confidence only comes through true love. That is why Christians are truly tolerant people.
One of the reasons that non-believers are so anxious to push their opinions, exalt themselves, to over estimate their own convictions- resenting anything that would tend to deflower their personal values- is because they see no other hope for their happiness-save in themselves. That is why they are so touchy, so eager to make their opinions heard, so determined on being right. They clutch at themselves like drowning men clutch a life-jacket. And as life goes on they are never at peace having found nothing at the end of every road but Self.
I hope this answers your question well enough. God Bless

What the heck? Just because christians are christians doesnt mean they are perfect. Why does everyone believe that. Just because they are called christians doesnt mean they are all the same. Maybe do a little more thinking next time before just asking something as stupid as this.

You have absolutely no idea what we non-believers must tolerate, just because we're outnumbered. None at all.

Christians aren't tolerant. Most Christians wouldn't know tolerant if it bit them on the butt.

A quick look at history will show that Christians have been very untolerant of non-believers, so I guess we just returning the favor.
